Are you passionate about animal welfare and dairy farming? Arla is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Chief Veterinarian to join our dynamic team, focusing on the development of our farm assurance programme Arlagården, our welfare strategy and improving practices across our farms.
We welcome candidates from different countries, and you could be working out of either our HQ in Aarhus, Denmark; Leeds, UK; Düsseldorf, Germany or Stockholm, Sweden. You should look forward to some travel activities across our European markets.
How will you make an impact?
The Chief Veterinarian will use their expertise to help shape Arla's animal welfare strategy, oversee the Arlagården farm standards program, and lead projects to uphold high standards across our 8,000 farms in Denmark, the UK, Germany, Sweden, and the Netherlands. This role is essential to keeping Arla at the forefront of animal health and welfare, vital for our commitment to high-quality dairy products.
1. Collaborate with our Chief Welfare Specialist to develop and implement Arla’s animal welfare strategy
2. Contribute to the development of Arlagården and farm standards
3. Provide clear, evidence-based positions and policies on animal welfare issues, using a network that spans Arla’s main European markets
4. Offer guidance and support to the team managing the output of Arla’s quality programme, Arlagården
5. Lead ad-hoc welfare-related projects supporting Arla’s Future26 Strategy
6. Work cross-functionally, providing input and expertise to several teams within Arla
7. Train and educate staff on animal health and welfare practices, considering regional differences in Arla’s owner countries
8. Stay current with the latest research and developments in veterinary medicine.
To maintain practical farm activities, you could balance active veterinary practice with strategic contributions to Arla’s mission, potentially working four days a week at Arla and one day in practice.
How do I become a success?
Candidates must have a deep understanding of farming complexities and be well-connected in the industry across various countries. You should champion animal welfare, possess comprehensive knowledge of trends and policies affecting dairy cattle, thrive in a collaborative matrix environment, and nurture strong internal relationships. Additionally, you should have:
1. A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or equivalent
2. 7-10 years of experience in veterinary medicine, focused on livestock
3. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
4. Extensive knowledge of animal health and welfare regulations and standards, particularly within Europe/UK
5. Awareness of future directions in animal welfare requirements and developments
6. An ability to work cooperatively with other departments and stakeholders
