Medical Engineering Specialist Technician (Band 6)
The Medical Engineering department provides a wide range of technical, scientific, procurement and management services to NCIC, serving most specialties and departments across Cumbria. The core services are based at the two Acute Hospitals, the Cumberland Infirmary & West Cumberland Hospitals with some specialist satellite Facilities around Cumbria.
The Post holder is responsible for the day-to-day reactive and preventive maintenance of medical devices and equipment ranging from patient monitoring systems, infusion devices, renal dialysis systems, anaesthesia systems and ventilators and will provide cross-site support, assistance and cover for the Medical Engineering department in the delivery of its service across both West Cumberland Hospital and Cumberland Infirmary and primary care locations.
The Post holder will mentor, train and certify the work of less experienced medical engineering technicians.
The Post holder will provide support, assistance and cover for the team leader in the day-to-day running of the Medical Engineering department when required.
Main duties of the job
1. Support the Medical Engineering department in the delivery of its service to both the West Cumberland Hospital and Cumberland Infirmary and primary care locations.
2. Manage, repair, test and calibrate biomedical equipment, including complex renal and anaesthetic equipment, used within the Trust, ensuring it is in safe working order.
3. Provide technical advice and information to clinical and non-clinical staff on the evaluation and procurement of new medical devices.
4. Mentor, train and certify the work of medical engineering Technicians.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* HNC/HND in electrical or mechanical engineering or relevant specialist experience
* Have undertaken Biomedical Equipment Practice Course
Knowledge and Experience
* Practical service and repair of band 4 and 5 medical equipment
* Continuing professional development with portfolio
* Electronic, electromechanical, hydraulic & pneumatic systems
* Digital & analogue circuitry & equipment
* Practical service and repair of renal, ventilation and anaesthetic equipment
Skills and Abilities
* Proven ability to fault-find on electronic components and digital / analogue circuits, electromechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
* Ability to assess situations and prioritise work to meet deadlines
* Ability to take a holistic & logical approach to interpretation of technical information and impart relevant information to medical staff and colleagues
* Good organisational ability.
* Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Personal Circumstances
* Meticulous.
* There is frequent requirement for sitting or standing in a restricted position for a substantial proportion of the working time.
* Occasional lifting or moving of heavy loads
* Occasional exposure to distressing or emotional circumstances in clinical areas.
* Some exposure to hazards which include, Electrical hazards, chemical, high risk patient contamination
* Requirement to use VDU equipment more or less continuously on most days.
* Infrequent exposure to noise, fumes in the engineering workshops
* Working in patient areas like critical care or theatres, where there may be distressing scenes.
Other requirements
* Ability to travel cross sites
* Flexible working, adaptable to meet the demands of the service.
* Willing to undertake further relevant development subject to training course availability
