The practice development team consists of a practice development midwife, a clinical practice development midwife, a fetal monitoring lead and a practice development maternity support worker.
The post holder will be required to implement, teach and support practice development initiatives, facilitating midwifery staff to develop safe, effective and person-centred clinical practice. The post holder also has an important role in delivering the Maternity Mandatory training and Education in accordance with local and national policy. The post holder will work with the Consultant Midwife and Quality and Safety Matron to ensure full implementation of midwifery mandatory training, to monitor effective practice and for safe service delivery including maintaining clinical quality standards in maternity.
This role is to provide maternity cover.
The post holder has an important role within the maternity team in delivering the Maternity Mandatory training and Education in accordance with local and national policy. The post holder will work with the Maternity Risk and Governance team to ensure full implementation of midwifery mandatory training and to monitor effective practice and for safe service delivery and maintaining clinical quality standards in maternity. The post holder will also be involved in monitoring compliance of mandatory training and performance in clinical care.
The Post Holder will be involved in management of clinical guidelines and clinical audits.
Duties will include contributing to the development and delivery of Midwifery Mandatory Training. The post holder will arrange dates, rooms and speakers for these days within the trust. The post holder will work closely with the Consultant Midwife, Risk and Governance Team to ensure learning from action plans are implemented in practice.
The post holder is responsible for booking all Maternity staff onto Trust Mandatory training days and adding these to e-roster. Mandatory training compliance is set at 90% and monitoring of this and reporting to the Maternity and Gynaecology Governance Committee is the responsibility of the Practice Development Midwife.
A key component of this role is the facilitating, monitoring, project management and operational support related to the management of change to the quality and improvement agenda and the ongoing evaluation of the subsequent impact on clinical practice. Promote and support innovation in practice and support professional staff to contribute to planning, delivery and evaluation of education and training opportunities within the service.
The post holder will work with the Consultant Midwife and Maternity Risk and Governance Team, Clinical Educator and the Senior Maternity Management Team to:
1. Work with the multidisciplinary team to ensure a quality service that is responsive to the needs of service users.
2. Ensure that the Maternity mandatory Training Strategy is effectively conveyed to all staff.
3. Undertake Mandatory Training for Maternity staff and ensure any learning from action plans are implemented.
4. Be involved in reviewing Mandatory Training for Maternity staff to ensure it is in line with NHS key initiatives.
5. Identify and book staff onto any further studies/training relevant to Maternity services in or out of region within the maternity budget.
6. Contribute to relevant Maternity clinical guidelines and ensure they are distributed to the appropriate staff for update or review.
7. Effectively utilise the Trust’s Mandatory training systems.
8. Act as a clinical role model promoting professional, competent standards, working closely with the multi-disciplinary team.
9. Be actively involved in the various meetings within the service that involve the Practice Development Midwife.
10. Undertake a clinical shift on a weekly basis, across all maternity areas, in order to provide training and support to staff as well as support the clinical workload as required.
11. Be available to staff whilst on duty to provide advice and support.
12. Manage clinical audit and liaise with the Clinical Audit and effectiveness group (CAEG) meetings.
13. Ensure that all required statistics are available as required by the service, Division and Trust.
14. Audit of practice where appropriate following investigation into clinical incidents and ensuring that any necessary changes in practice are incorporated into Divisional policies and guidelines.
Working relationships and communication:
The post holder will be required to work within the multidisciplinary team ensuring that they adhere to the robust communications systems in place which underpin effective client care by:
1. Ensuring effective communication at all times with all staff within the Maternity Service and the Division.
2. Working collaboratively with other members of the Maternity Practice Development and ensuring there is cross-cover for close colleagues’ essential duties in the event of their absence.
3. Providing feedback to staff, through various methods; newsletters, presentations and one-to-ones as required and where appropriate to ensure learning takes place.
4. Working with the Consultant Midwife and Maternity and Gynaecology Risk and Governance Matron to implement actions identified by the Risk and Governance process.
5. Acting as a positive role model, creating staff confidence in the clinical setting.
6. Working with other members of the multidisciplinary team where required.
7. Promoting good working relationships with midwives, obstetricians, anaesthetists and neonatologists.
8. Providing training for staff related to all aspects of Maternity as required within the mandatory training programme.
9. Run and Monitor Emergency Drills on Delivery Suite, Dolphin suite and Ward 11.
10. Assisting band 7 maternity staff to help engage all Maternity staff in e-learning.
11. The post holder will be involved with revalidation.
Leadership
The post holder will act as a clinical leader within the maternity service ensuring that they are:
1. Aware of and work with, as required, the Divisional Management Team, liaising closely with all personnel regarding training and educational matters.
2. Aware of and actively involved in ensuring that recommendations from other external bodies (i.e. NICE, RCOG, RCM, MBRACCE) are considered and implemented as appropriate.
3. Suitably able to communicate with staff to consistently promote a culture of continued professional development.
4. Participate in the managerial on-call rota out of hours (pro-rata, evenings, weekends and bank holidays).
5. Able to encourage autonomous practice and confidence in decision making using a sound evidence base.
6. Support the Maternity and Gynaecology Risk and Governance Matron and Head of Midwifery in leading the Clinical Governance agenda within the Maternity Services.
7. Attend monthly Safety Champions meetings and provide updates and escalation around any practice development issues which have the potential to impact on maternal or neonatal safety.
8. Aware of and able to promote equal opportunities legislation.
9. Aware of and able to demonstrate how they value diversity within staff and clients.
10. Able to participate in selection, recruitment and retention of staff.
Clinical Audit and Guidelines
The Practice Development Midwife will be responsible for ensuring that any guidelines related to maternity education and training are evidence based, accessible to staff and are up to date by:
1. Collecting and collating data/information effectively and to time, using set systems and consistent with legislation policies and procedures.
2. Confirming that the data/information meets pre-set quality criteria and reports any quality issues.
3. Maintaining the integrity of data/information using agreed procedures.
4. Reporting the data/information clearly in the required format at the time agreed.
5. Discussing with their line manager the changes that need to be made in practice and the reasons for them.
6. Supporting multidisciplinary colleagues in understanding the need for and making agreed changes to practice.
7. Adapting practice as agreed and to time seeking support if necessary.
8. Effectively conducting tasks related to evaluating services when required to do so.
9. Passing on to the appropriate person constructive views and ideas on improving services for users and the public.
10. Alerting line manager when direction, policies and strategies are adversely affecting users of services or the public.
Responsibility for financial and physical resources
The post holder will escalate the need for any educational, equipment or other resources required. The post holder will also:
1. Work as part of the leadership team within the maternity service to ensure that the cleanliness of the environment meets national standards.
2. Work, in conjunction with other leaders in the service, assist to co-ordinate the day-to-day clinical risk activities and ‘cover’ for managerial colleagues to ensure that adequate staff skill mix to cover the maternity unit within the given resources where necessary.
3. Work with the wider maternity team to review and form midwifery and relevant nursing policies.
