Your timetable for the year will be provided by the university and will demonstrate all the relevant information needed to complete your course. It will also include your clinical days/periods so you can not only gain knowledge about School nursing in our services but which is enhanced by our clinical staff who will support you in gaining the experience and knowledge to enhance your clinical skills. You will also have details of all the required assessments for the year. You will start off as supernumerary, observing your supervisor and other members of the team, but will gradually build up your skills in order to do the work which school nurses do independently. As a student school nurse, you will be involved in the Healthy Child Programme and this will be achieved through health promotion sessions and early intervention. These may be face-face or virtual but you will be supported throughout in order to gain the confidence needed to support children and young people. You will also gain knowledge and experience in safeguarding and child protection which is another important part of our role. As an NHS Trust we strongly encourage and support vaccination as this remains the best way to protect yourself, your family, your colleagues and of course patients and service users when working on our healthcare settings.
