Virology biomedical scientists are responsible for the diagnosis of infection and disease processes by the application of biological, serological and molecular technology, utilizing the most up to date scientific methods. Diagnostic work includes examination of patient samples such as blood, respiratory samples and cerebrospinal fluid using manual and automated techniques.
We are looking for a Trainee Biomedical Scientist to join our dedicated, valued team in the Virology laboratory at the Hull site.
The laboratory is UKAS accredited and we fully support our staff members' professional development.

Main duties of the job
Under supervision:
1. To carry out the analysis of patient samples, quality controls (QC) and external quality assessment samples (EQA) according to departmental SOPs and departmental Quality Assurance Policy.
2. To ensure that specialist equipment within the area of work is functioning efficiently through good housekeeping, troubleshooting and preventive maintenance.
3. Technical validation of patient results.
4. Communicate effectively with clinicians, nurses and other service users on information of a technical nature.
5. To undertake shift work including evening, weekend and night work. This will involve working mostly alone and includes the provisional authorisation of results that are used for immediate patient management, carrying potentially serious consequences if any errors occur in the process.

QUALIFICATIONS
Essential
1. Working towards a BSc (Hons) IBMS approved Biomedical Science course (or alternative IBMS/HCPC approved qualification/apprenticeship).
Experience

1. Knowledge of laboratory procedures.

1. Experience in a laboratory offering a similar test repertoire.
