An exciting development opportunity has arisen on the Surgical Oncology Unit for a permanent, band 5 ( hours) staff nurse post.
You should be a highly motivated professional with surgical experience, who wishes to develop their clinical knowledge and management skills. You must be a team player who is driven to improve patient care and experience, ensuring the delivery of exceptional, high quality care.
Our patients undergo highly specialized and often complex surgery across the Colorectal, Urology, Gynecology and Plastic Surgery specialties.
The successful candidate will also possess excellent organizational, communication and clinical skills relevant to the post and be able to act as a positive role model. Commitment to the on-going development of the ward and multidisciplinary team working is essential. We welcome newly qualified nurses into this post also.

Main duties of the job
We care for all surgical oncology patients pre and post operatively within the Christie, working closely with the MDT to ensure safe recovery and safe discharge.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Professional
6. Manage and generally supervise the ward in the absence of senior staff.
7. Take individual responsibility for the nursing care of a group of patients as a registered nurse
8. Provide a supportive role on the ward for nursing, medical and clerical Staff
9. Undertake the nursing care of patients, ensuring privacy & dignity is maintained whilst being aware of physical and psychological needs
10. To give a clear and accurate update at change of duties and ensure accurate documentation of nursing interventions
11. To participate in the emergency care of patients and give any necessary instructions, including transfer information
12. Participate in nursing procedures appropriate to the department
13. Support and assist in the induction/training of junior staff/Health Care Assistants acting as mentor to designated staff
14. To welcome patients to the ward and its routine
15. Be able to act as ward co-ordinator and ensure the safe and timely through put of patients, liasing closely with triage/admission staff, medical staff and other wards
16. To liaise with medical and para medical personnel and community organisations
17. To highlight areas of improvement/development within the department and undertake relevant projects
18. To act as support for other ward nurses in relation to care of the surgical patient
19. Safely escort patients to other areas and collect blood products from key departments
20. Assist in the provision of meals / refreshments for patients whilst meeting their nutritional needs
21. Assist in the general housekeeping duties of the ward
22. Help to maintain a safe environment and report faults/risks etc to the nurse in charge
23. Liaise with staff member responsible for stores/stationery and ordering and assist in the maintenance of stock levels
24. Handles patients personal possessions, ensure cash and valuables kept securely as per policy
25. Correct care and custody of controlled drugs and aid the safe storage of medicines
26. Assist medical staff with procedures
27. Carry out certain procedures such as cannulation and 12 lead ECGs and be prepared to learn new skills
EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
28. The staff nurse is responsible for their own personal development and maintaining a personal development plan
29. To complete the Ward introductory pack and preceptor pack
30. Complete Principles and Practice of Intravenous Skills Programme and Cannulation Skills Training and update annually
31. Annually attend all mandatory study days as per Trust and unit guidance
PERSONAL
32. Demonstrate a pleasant and approachable manner and help create and promote a good working relationship
33. Show professional and courteous manner when answering the telephone and other enquires
34. Maintain confidentiality with regard to patient information both at work and outside of working hours
35. To be aware of and adhere to all policies including; sickness and absence, confidentiality, uniform and responsibilities under the Health and Safety at work act and be familiar with all risk assessments pertinent to the MAU
36. Report and record all accidents and complaints according to the agreed policy
37. To be aware of limitations and utilise the preceptor system for any issues that arise
