Applications are invited for the post of a Locum Consultant Colorectal General Surgeon, fixed term until 31st March 2026.
The postholder will join the existing surgical team within the Directorate of General Surgery delivering care across South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. The post will be based at South Tyneside Hospital but there will be a requirement to work across both sites.
The post is full-time comprising 10 Programmed Activities (PAs).

Main duties of the job
The post holder will join the existing team of 18 General Surgeons providing emergency General Surgery and possess specialist skills in Lower GI Surgery. Emergency work would be on a 1:6 basis, comprising a combination of 24 hour on call at South Tyneside District Hospital and a separate day and night 12 hour service provision at Sunderland Royal Hospital.
Overall responsibilities of the role include the co-ordination and delivery of strategic and operational aspects of General Surgery Services across South Tyneside and Sunderland and the wider sub-regional catchment area. These will reflect National and Local priorities including the strategic direction of the Trust and the Directorate of General Surgery.
The post holder is expected to possess Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons and clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCST in colorectal Surgery.
The post holder will have excellent team working skills, a flexible approach to service delivery and service improvement and an enquiring, critical approach.
Job responsibilities
The post holder will join a team of 18 General Surgeons providing emergency general surgery, as well as possessing specialist skills in Lower GI Surgery. Emergency work would be on a 1:6 basis, comprising a combination of 24 hour on call at South Tyneside District Hospital and a separate day and night 12-hour service provision at Sunderland Royal Hospital.
The post will have commitments across the ST and SRH sites for both elective and emergency care. Flexibility in job planning will be required to facilitate the use of General surgical allocated theatres. Fixed commitments will include the colorectal MDT at SRH with regular endoscopy lists, a 2WW colorectal clinic and a General Surgery clinic performed flexibly.

The General Surgery Department is accredited for Higher Surgical Training and is regarded as one of the premier training units within the region. Feedback from the Foundation School survey for Foundation Trainees has improved significantly in recent years and is very good. The post-holder will be expected to partake in training of all medical and other staff as well as undergraduates to ensure trainees have a good training experience.
The appointee will be expected to undergo continuing medical education and appraisal in accordance with the guidelines agreed by the Royal College of Surgeons and GMC and the post-holder will be entitled and encouraged to take regulatory study leave.
There are also educational links with Sunderland, Durham and Northumbria Universities.
Person Specification
Teaching and Education
1. Experience of supervising junior medical staff.
2. Experience of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
3. Ability to teach clinical / technical / practical skills.
4. Qualification in medical education.
Experience
1. Undergone colorectal surgical training with log book evidence of independent practice.
2. Evidence of performance at day 1 consultant level in colorectal surgery.
3. Evidence of current professional development.
4. Competent independent General Surgical practice.
5. Experience of Training & Teaching Surgical trainees.
Management and Administrative Experience
1. Understanding of the NHS, Clinical Governance process and resource issues.

Qualifications
1. Primary medical qualification.
2. Full GMC registration.
3. Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCST in Colorectal Surgery.
4. Competence in managing Emergency General surgery on call.
5. Laparoscopic skills & experience including level 4 competence of colorectal surgery procedures.
6. Competent diagnostic skills in colonoscopy with JAG accreditation.
7. Good interpersonal skills.
8. Ability to communicate effectively with patients and staff.
9. Ability to develop and progress a research project and audit.
10. Ability to run training courses.
11. Papers presented at regional/ national meetings.
12. Research methodology knowledge/experience.
