Organisation: Concrete - part of Honeycomb Group
Location: Stoke, Festival Park
Area of interest: Outdoors or Active Roles, Supporting Adults, Sharing Existing or Learning New Skills
Description:
We're Honeycomb Group and we provide homes that fit our customer's needs including affordable rent, shared ownership, domestic abuse refuge, and community housing. We also provide specialist homelessness support and accommodation for men, women, and young adults through our support brand, Concrete.
We’re looking for a Lead Volunteer to oversee and/or facilitate our weekly gardening sessions for around 5 – 10 hours per week. You’ll be skilled in, and passionate about, horticulture and can help our customers – who have faced homelessness and other complex needs – to learn at their own speed, all while celebrating their successes. You’ll also play a key role in planning these sessions to cater to the participants' needs, bringing a creative flair to the facilitation process. The role will be predominantly based at Festival Heights Allotments, Greyhound Way, ST6 3LQ. Our head office is 308 London Road, Stoke, ST4 5AB, so you would need to come here on a more occasional basis for things like training.
Some of your responsibilities will include:
* Planning and facilitating the gardening sessions to meet the needs of the customers and take a creative approach to how these are facilitated.
* Teaching customers how to grow plants/herbs/vegetables.
* Empowering customers to care for the plot.
* Liaising with the Community & Tenancy Sustainability Team Leader around maintenance, ordering seeds, etc.
* Maintaining the plot to keep the space tidy and accessible to customers (e.g., weeding, lawn mowing, strimming, pruning, and clearing up leaves).
* Operating tools including lawnmower and hedge trimmers.
* Maintaining the plot in between gardening sessions.
* Ensuring that the site manager is kept up to date on any proposed changes to the plot i.e., building installations.
* Ensuring that relevant health and safety equipment and PPE is used by all on the plot when required.
* Helping the charity to find funding opportunities to ensure the Community Allotment remains sustainable.
* Maintaining a high standard of record keeping where required.
* Creating and updating a robust seasonal planner to ensure crop maximisation.
* Ensuring the plot risk assessment is kept up to date, by advising the Team Leader of any concerns and/or changes.
Skills and Experience desired:
* Good level of knowledge in horticulture and experience of managing your own garden/allotment.
* The role is physically demanding and therefore will require a reasonable level of fitness.
* Able to prioritise and exercise flexibility according to weather and seasons.
* Good communication skills.
* Good knowledge of risk assessments.
* Willingness to self-develop and complete mandatory training.
* DBS check (essential).
