BloombergNEF (BNEF) is seeking a talented, highly-motivated individual to join our Technology & Innovation team to develop unique insights, data and analytical tools that help our clients navigate the opportunities and challenges across the energy transition. Specifically, you will be building datasets, tools and analysis on the climate-tech venture capital and private equity markets.
BloombergNEF (BNEF) is a strategic research provider covering global commodity markets and the disruptive technologies driving the transition to a low-carbon economy. Our expert coverage assesses pathways for the power, transport, industry, buildings and agriculture sectors to adapt to the energy transition. We help commodity trading, corporate strategy, finance and policy professionals navigate change and generate opportunities. BNEF has over 250 staff based across the globe.
Our Team:
You will be based in our London office, working as part of the Tech & Innovation team at BNEF, with members based in London and New York. Our data-driven research helps clients stay on top of emerging climate-tech. This includes any technologies with the potential for climate mitigation across the energy, transport, industry, agriculture and buildings sector.
Our team of experts develop strategic insights to help guide industry leaders at a time of rapid change. We work with the largest corporations across oil and gas, banking and finance, utilities, government and many other sectors.
BNEF Team Ethos:
To succeed at BNEF we need people who can work in an independent manner and show initiative to develop their own viewpoints, yet be collaborative with colleagues. We don’t rely on the status quo, we look for innovative yet pragmatic thinking that turns big ideas into real insights and impact. Working at BNEF sometimes feels chaotic; we need teams that are both dynamic and structured to generate the unique perspectives our clients really value. Our teams are diverse, creative, focused, and fun!
What’s the role?
You will join as an analyst covering the climate-tech venture capital, private equity and public market financing. This will include tracking startups and investment trends across all climate-relevant sectors, as well as new fund announcements and fund performance. You will produce reports and datasets that will convey the findings of your research to BNEF clients.
The successful candidate will work with our team to identify topics of interest and importance, conduct independent research, build and maintain datasets and models, generate insightful findings, produce written reports of publishable quality, and present the research in webinars and presentations. You will collaborate with colleagues and clients from different cultures and countries, in person and remotely – periodic travel is expected. You’ll also develop an internal and external network of industry contacts to gather insights, identify trends and collect information. You will work closely with commercial teams to ensure that our cutting-edge research translates into business impact for Bloomberg and BNEF.
We will trust you to:
* Create and maintain datasets and tools illustrating and analyzing the flow of capital into climate-tech startups.
* Write and publish reports based on the data collection and analysis to explain the business-critical trends in the market.
* Collaborate across departments at Bloomberg, particularly our data teams, to ensure that your research reaches as wide an audience as possible.
* Explain your research to clients via email, telephone and in-person meetings.
* Deliver presentations at industry events.
* Build a reputation in industry for your insightful commentary and analysis of the climate-tech venture capital and private equity sector.
You'll need to have:
* A Bachelor’s degree demonstrating strong quantitative and analytic skills. Ideally with a focus on finance.
* Ability to think critically and develop thoughtful opinions by cutting through the data, extracting key patterns, applying skepticism to the claims of industry participants and asking insightful questions.
* Fluent English and good communication skills: writing (for research reports), reading (to conduct research) and speaking (for presentations at conferences, to clients, or to the media).
* Strong quantitative skills, significant experience using Excel and comfort using large datasets and models.
* Aptitude for graphically presenting data and writing clearly and concisely to distill and communicate complex topics to non-specialist audiences.
* Attention to detail, for example with gathering and checking data, or fine-tuning narratives.
* A commitment to diversity and inclusion, and a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues from a variety of backgrounds.
* Intellectual curiosity, interest in and enthusiasm for new technologies and determining how they work, and their impact on industry and energy.
We'd love to see:
* Experience working in a startup-focused or investor environment such as an investment bank, venture capital, or private equity firm.
* A familiarity with the decarbonization routes available to different sectors of the economy including energy, transport, industry, agriculture and buildings.
* Up to 3 years work experience in a relevant sector.
* Experience with analytical tools, software and coding such as QGIS, SQL, and Python.
