An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Associate Practitioner to assist with Point of Care Testing (POCT), based in the Department of Clinical Chemistry at Sheffield Children's Hospital.
The successful candidate will be required to assist the Point of Care Co-ordinator to maintain equipment, troubleshoot problems, distribute External Quality Assurance samples, and assist with the training of colleagues in the use of Point of Care equipment.
Main duties of the job
1. Performs a number of healthcare science/scientific activities, under the indirect supervision/direction of a suitably qualified practitioner.
2. Work in line with all prescribed Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Policies as directed and be involved in the review process.
3. Prioritise work to ensure correct workflow through the laboratory and ensure urgent tests are processed according to SOP.
4. Ensure all tests are performed efficiently within the assigned time and in accordance with established protocols to the required standards.
5. Work in a safe manner in accordance with service, Directorate and Trust health and safety policies.
6. Adhere to the requirements of the Data Protection Act and treat with discretion all confidential information acquired while fulfilling professional duties.
7. Maintain the accuracy and integrity of the diagnostic testing process.
8. Work effectively/efficiently to minimise wastage of resources.
9. Assist in monitoring quality standards and perform audits as required.
10. Assist with aspects of health and safety monitoring and risk assessments.
11. Deliver staff training as appropriate.
Person specification
Education and Qualifications
* Foundation level degree or equivalent level 4 qualification OR IBMS cert of achievement part II plus extensive lab experience or Foundation Level Degree
* Other relevant courses regarding H&S, supervision, quality, or training
Experience
* Experience of a range of laboratory techniques
* Detailed understanding of job content
* Ability to work with other staff to improve and develop working practices
* Discipline-specific NHS laboratory experience
Personal Qualities
* Ability to plan and prioritise allocated work
Skills and Knowledge
* Keyboard and basic IT skills
* Awareness of Health & Safety issues
* Effective communication skills, written and oral
