Transport for the North was established in 2018 as the first Sub-national Transport Body in England to transform the transport system for the North of England, providing the strategic infrastructure needed for enhanced economic growth.
As a partnership, we bring together the North’s local transport authorities and business leaders with delivery partners, like Network Rail and National Highways, and work closely with government to support and enable delivery of the North’s Strategic Transport Plan ambitions to drive sustainable and inclusive growth.
Role overview:
This appointment represents a unique opportunity to work for a pan-regional organisation focused on improving outcomes for people and communities across the North. By managing and developing our policy and research work in relation to both decarbonisation and emerging technologies, you will play a vital part in the implementation of our Strategic Transport Plan.
This role involves delivering a range of research projects, data tools, and partner support related to decarbonisation and climate adaptation, as well as helping to ensure TfN and its partners are appraised of the opportunities and challenges posed by the latest new technologies. The role provides the opportunity to explore the complex inter-relationships between new technologies and the need for a fair and prosperous decarbonisation transition for the North.
The role will maintain existing and build new networks and relationships, both internally and externally, working closely with our partner authorities, and also our rail, road, and transport appraisal and modelling teams (TAME), supporting TfN’s Strategic Ambitions and our headline objectives in relation to both decarbonisation and connected mobility.
What we’re looking for:
The successful candidate will have significant experience in the field of transport decarbonisation, as well as wider environmental and sustainability aspects, and the ability to apply this experience in complex strategy and policy situations. The candidate must also have experience in tracking new technologies related to transport systems, such as connected and autonomous vehicles, and for other related sectors where relevant to transport systems.
You must have the confidence, experience, and ability to navigate the complex trade-offs involved in transport decarbonisation and transport infrastructure development, developing effective narratives to ensure TfN and its partners continue to progress towards achieving the outcomes defined within our STP.
The successful candidate must be at ease in frequently engaging with a wide range of external and internal stakeholders to ensure TfN’s work in these areas remains relevant and optimises value for our local partners, as well as the ability and confidence to represent TfN in a wide variety of public and professional forums.
Candidates must possess a Master’s degree or other specialist post-graduate qualification (or equivalent level reached through experience) in an environmental, sustainability, and/or transport-related subject. Above all else, we’re looking for someone who’s passionate about achieving a fair and prosperous decarbonisation transition for our communities.
Closing Date: 12:00pm 11th Feb 2025
Provisional Interview Date: 24th/25th Feb 2025
