Job Overview
Ward F7 is a 32 bedded vascular ward based at Frimley Park Hospital caring for patients with both vascular conditions and general surgery. The ward offers excellent support to new members of the team and provides various training to support your needs. A full induction to the ward and the band 6 role will be given, and ongoing personal development will be planned through the appraisal system. There are opportunities to undertake leadership courses and the surgical acute care course.
Main duties of the job
* To act as a credible role model.
* To undertake operational duties to maintain efficiency and patient safety.
* To deliver and audit the trust and national standards.
* To support and provide leadership for the nursing team.
* To act as a mentor and lead induction for new staff and students.
* To participate in recruitment and selection of new staff.
* To be aware of the complaints procedure and to deal with ward level complaints as necessary.
Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
Professional Clinical Role
* Responsible for the assessment of patient care needs, the development, implementation, and evaluation of programmes of care without supervision.
* To participate and assist in systematic monitoring and evaluation of nursing practice.
* To participate and assist in setting standards of patient care based on sound evidence-based findings, implementing these into practice.
* Ensure that the nursing practices of the area comply with the Trust’s Nursing policies and procedures and maintain high standards of nursing practice.
* To comply at all times with the NMC Code of Conduct (2002).
* Communicate effectively and liaise with all health care staff as appropriate.
* To encourage and maintain good relationships with Medical Staff and other members of the Primary care & Social Services teams in order to provide the best care.
* To support the implementation and maintenance of Team Nursing within the clinical area, taking responsibility for a small case-load of patients.
* To participate in Quality Assurance initiatives within the unit.
* To ensure that all issues relating to the implementation of clinical governance are addressed on the unit.
* Pro-actively respond to potential complaints, to prevent formal complaints from occurring.
* As part of professional development, occasionally co-ordinate the shift as the ‘nurse in charge’ under the direct supervision of a more senior member of staff.
Education and Research Role
* Act as a role model and mentor to students and junior staff.
* To undertake the D grade competency programme.
* Contribute towards the development of an effective learning environment within the clinical area.
Personal Development
* To maintain own personal & professional development, keeping PREP folders up to date.
Person Specification
Qualification
* Essential criteria: NMC Pin.
Surgical Care Experience
* Essential criteria: Minimum of 2 years experience on an acute surgical ward.
* Desirable criteria: Recognised surgical care course.
Leadership Experience
* Essential criteria: Ability to be Nurse in Charge.
* Desirable criteria: Leadership course.
