Job Closing Date: 26th January 2025
THE ROLE
BBC Studios is a world-renowned content studio and channels & streaming business, powered by British creativity, with a reach that touches audiences in every corner of the globe.
We work with outstanding creative talent who are responsible for platform-defining shows from Strictly Come Dancing to Bluey, Eastenders, Casualty, Prehistoric Planet and Planet Earth III.
BBC Studios Drama Productions sits at the heart of the UK as our slate of award-winning soaps and dramas continue to bring audiences together week after week.
At BBC Studios Drama Productions, we’re passionate about developing and nurturing a creative and diverse workforce. We pride ourselves on providing some of the most supportive, hands-on editorial and production training opportunities across the whole of the UK.
THE ROLE
We're excited to hear from experienced Storyliners and those who have worked in drama script and/or research teams and feel they would be suited to the story department.
Reporting to the Story Producer and working closely with the story, research and script teams, you will be responsible for generating story ideas and storylines. Like other dramas, we work to tight deadlines and budgets and look for people who have experience of delivering against similar pressures.
You will support the Story Editor to adjust, reword and reversion the story document, helping to take it from 1st draft to commissioning standard. You will attend story conferences and meetings, and have a writing style that is clear, concise and unambiguous. Importantly, you will be a fan of the show and have a good knowledge of current and past storylines.
We will be looking for previous experience of script editing, story editing, storylining, researching or writing, preferably on a long-running drama. We want to see that you understand character, story and structure, and are able to suggest storylines which align with Casualty's tone and style.
If you are selected to be in the pool you will be considered when Storyliner positions come up on Casualty. Unfortunately, being in the pool does not guarantee you will end up working with us.
If you are offered a position on Casualty you will need to be based in Cardiff for the duration of the contract. Unfortunately, we do not cover expenses for this.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Confidently adjust and rework the story document to incorporate notes and changes, taking the document from first draft through to commissioning document.
2. Collaborate with story team colleagues and suggest your own ideas to generate possible story and character material.
3. Attend and contribute to long-term quarterly story conferences, monthly story meetings, planning and commissioning meetings.
4. Ensure Casualty’s creative vision is implemented consistently in all material.
5. Address and solve story issues throughout the story/script process.
6. Work closely with research and script teams, ensuring all story material is factually accurate.
7. Full understanding and awareness of the importance of diversity, how on-screen content reflects a diverse society, and ensuring diverse groups are portrayed accurately and appropriately in line with BBC Editorial Guidelines.
WHAT DOES IT TAKE?
1. Script Editing, Story Editing or Storylining experience, preferably on a continuing drama.
2. Ability to write clear, concise and unambiguous prose in keeping with the Casualty in-house style.
3. Thorough and demonstrable understanding of character, story and structure.
4. Awareness of the financial impact of different storylines. Evidence of adhering to scheduling and budgetary restrictions in previous roles.
5. Enthusiasm, demonstrable interest and understanding of continuing drama, especially Casualty.
6. Understanding of Copyright law, Writers Guild agreements, contracts and the legal implications of the production process.
7. Proven ability to persuade and influence and resolve differences in professional opinions.
STORY TEAM TALENT POOLS
The Casualty story team is essential to the show's success. Awarded the best British soap by BAFTA this year, we have increasingly high standards and want to work with exciting, innovative story talent who are as passionate about the show as we are.
These talent pools are an opportunity for us to reach out and engage with people who want to work in our story team.
If you are successfully selected to be in the talent pool it doesn't mean you will definitely end up working with us. Being in the pool means you will be considered when opportunities come up.
The application process is designed so you get the chance to try out your skills on our storylines. If you are invited to an assessment centre you will also meet our producers and editorial team and can showcase your work to them as well as starting to build relationships.
If you are invited to work on Casualty you will need to be based in Cardiff for the duration of the contract, or live within a commutable distance. Unfortunately, we don't provide financial assistance for this or cover expenses.
