What do our operatives do?
Our rail network carries 18,000 passenger trains and 1,000 freight trains across 10,000 miles of track each day.
Rail signalling operatives:
Our rail signalling operatives keep Britain's signals (the traffic lights of the track) in tip top condition to keep passengers and freight moving safely and without interruption. No single day is the same, from unexpected weather events to third party damage, you'd be responsible for maintaining and fixing all signalling assets. You'd be looking after a range of assets, including level crossings, switches, track circuits, line side location cases and (yes, you guessed it) signals.
Overhead line operatives:
Overhead line operatives work as part of a team carrying out planned works, responding to faults and patrolling the track. There's lots of variety and no day is the same on the railway. Typical tools used on the job are earth poles to isolate overhead lines and power hand tools to cut down vegetation; this work is often done whilst working at height in a cherry picker.
Track operatives:
Carrying millions of people daily, the track is made up of rails, railway ties (sleepers), fasteners, railway switches, ballast, and foundations. These components of the railway track play different roles in providing support for trains. Our track operatives keep all this in tip top condition to keep passengers and freight moving safely and without interruption. Using a mix of new technology and manual inspection, Network Rail monitors railway assets around the clock. Maintenance teams are briefed at the start of each shift on the maintenance work to be completed.
Offtrack operatives:
Our railway needs maintaining, and our off-track teams will be responsible for maintaining, inspecting, and repairing the land alongside the track network to keep the railway safe and efficient. This includes vegetation management, drainage, and ancillary structures.
Undertrack operatives (rail testing):
You'll be responsible for maintaining, inspecting, and repairing equipment under the track network to keep the railway safe and efficient. This role has a heavy skill focus on joinery, lubrication, and welding. It's a vital part of the process which maintains our railway and infrastructure.
Distribution & plant operatives:
You'll work as part of a team to keep power flowing through the electrified rails safely and efficiently. Day to day you'll work on the nuts, bolts and cables of the electrification system making sure that the railway has the power to run the trains, signals, and stations.
As these are entry level roles, operatives support and learn from our technicians. All operatives receive full training and guidance, learning how to use tools and equipment safely. Pending successful learning and development, operatives can progress to technicians.
To reduce disruption to rail services and to increase safety for maintenance teams, this work is often done at night or over weekends. Being able to work a varied shift pattern is important but we'll provide your roster 4 weeks in advance so you can make plans with family and friends in good time.
