The Senior Estimator in the utilities sector plays a crucial role in the planning and delivery of utility infrastructure projects. They are responsible for estimating costs for a wide range of projects, including but not limited to, electrical, water, gas, and telecommunications infrastructure works. The Senior Estimator works closely with project managers, engineers, and clients to provide accurate cost assessments and ensure that projects are delivered within budget while maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality.
Key Responsibilities:
Cost Estimation: Prepare detailed, accurate, and timely cost estimates for utility projects, including labor, materials, equipment, and overheads.
Bid Preparation: Lead the preparation and submission of bid proposals for utility infrastructure projects, ensuring that all aspects of the work are costed correctly and thoroughly.
Project Analysis: Analyze project plans, specifications, and drawings to assess project requirements, risks, and potential cost implications.
Client and Stakeholder Interaction: Liaise with clients, contractors, suppliers, and subcontractors to gather necessary information and clarify any technical or project scope issues.
Risk Management: Identify potential risks and uncertainties that may impact cost estimates and propose mitigation strategies.
Contract Negotiations: Assist in the negotiation of contract terms, pricing, and change orders with clients, subcontractors, and suppliers.
Cost Control and Monitoring: Track project progress and costs throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring the work is completed within the established budget.
Team Leadership: Provide guidance and mentorship to junior estimators and support staff, fostering a collaborative and high-performing estimating team.
Market Research: Stay updated on industry trends, new technologies, and market pricing to ensure estimates are competitive and aligned with current market conditions.
Documentation and Reporting: Maintain comprehensive records of all cost estimates, proposals, and correspondence, ensuring accurate reporting and compliance with company procedures and standards.Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
Experience: Minimum of 7–10 years of experience in estimating for utility projects (such as electrical, water, gas, or telecommunications infrastructure). Experience in both public and private sector projects is preferred.
Technical Skills: Proficient in estimating software (e.g., Candy, CostX, or similar tools), Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Project), and project management software.
Knowledge: Strong understanding of utility infrastructure design, construction processes, and cost management principles.
Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information to clients and stakeholders clearly.
Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a keen eye for detail and accuracy in cost estimation.
Leadership: Demonstrated experience in leading and managing a team of estimators, as well as collaborating with cross-functional teams.
Certifications: Professional certifications such as MRICS (Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors), AACE (Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineering), or similar are a plus.Key Attributes:
