We are seeking an experienced, skilled, and passionate cook to join our team at a Children’s care home. The ideal candidate will have expertise in preparing delicious West Indian cuisine, along with proficiency in other international cuisines. The role will involve preparing nutritious and well-balanced meals for young people of varying ages, as well as maintaining cleanliness in the kitchen and dining areas. The cook will work collaboratively with other staff members to ensure the young people receive meals that meet dietary requirements, preferences, and cultural needs in a safe and clean environment. Key Responsibilities: Meal Preparation: Prepare, cook, and present West Indian dishes (e.g., jerk chicken, curry goat, rice and peas, etc.) and other international cuisines to suit a variety of tastes and dietary needs. Ensure all meals are nutritious, well-balanced, and meet any specific dietary requirements (e.g., allergies, vegetarian, etc.) for young people. Plan and prepare weekly meal menus, ensuring variety, balance, and nutritional value. Modify dishes to suit the preferences and needs of the young people, considering cultural diversity and special diets. Kitchen Management: Maintain a clean and organized kitchen, including the proper storage of ingredients and leftovers. Ensure kitchen equipment and appliances are used safely and are properly maintained. Monitor food stock levels and assist with inventory management, including ordering and receiving deliveries. Health and Safety Compliance: Ensure all food preparation and kitchen activities comply with local health, safety, and hygiene regulations. Implement and follow proper food handling, sanitation, and storage protocols to prevent contamination and ensure food safety. Adhere to allergy management guidelines and implement precautions to prevent cross-contamination. Cleaning Duties: Regularly clean kitchen surfaces, utensils, and dining areas after meal preparation. Dispose of waste according to established protocols and maintain a tidy, organized workspace. Assist with the washing of dishes, utensils, and kitchen tools as needed. Collaborative Work: Communicate effectively with care home staff to accommodate special meal requests and preferences. Collaborate with caregivers and other team members to ensure that meals are served at appropriate times and temperatures. Work in harmony with other kitchen staff to maintain a positive and efficient work environment. Desirable Skills: Previous experience working in a care home, school, or similar setting with young people. Knowledge of cultural and dietary needs specific to young people from diverse backgrounds.
