Role Responsibilities:
We’re looking for a highly organised and proactive Lab Manager to oversee lab operations. This role is critical to ensuring the lab, and Science and Engineering teams run efficiently.
Your responsibilities will include:
* Oversee day-to-day lab activities, ensuring smooth operations, troubleshooting and solving issues, and maintaining efficiency.
Manage stock, ordering, and procurement to ensure uninterrupted lab operations, aligning with company policies and alongside the team.
* Implement systems to enhance efficiency, streamline workflows, and ensure seamless workflows for Science and Engineering teams.
* Ensure all equipment issues, including those with in-house developed systems, are promptly logged, reported to the relevant teams, and effectively tracked through to resolution.
* Oversee equipment maintenance, servicing, and PAT testing, coordinating with external providers and supporting the Lab Technician as needed.
* Support implementation and maintenance of ISO13485 procedures and documentation, supporting audit readiness.
* Generate documentation and ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations, COSHH, risk assessments, and company-specific safety protocols.
* Oversee the storage and organisation of hazardous chemicals and bacterial stocks, ensuring up-to-date H&S protocols and backup plans are in place.
* Manage and maintain laboratory inventory, including chemicals, bacterial glycerol stocks, engineering components etc
* Manage incident reporting, investigations, and follow-up actions to enhance lab safety.
* Manage and mentor Lab Technician(s), fostering a collaborative and high-performing team, and delegating tasks effectively as required.
* Ensure accurate records are maintained including equipment calibration, inventory, and safety compliance in accordance with ISO 13485 procedures.
Person Specification:
We are looking for a proactive and detail-oriented Lab Manager with strong leadership and organisational skills. You should be capable of independently managing lab operations and supporting a team of scientists and engineers.
Qualifications & Experience:
We are open to varied backgrounds for this role but expect candidates to meet most of the following skills and experiences:
* Proven experience managing lab operations (academia or industry).
* A degree (BSc/BEng or higher) in a Scientific or Engineering discipline, or equivalent experience.
* Knowledge of ISO13485 (or equivalent standards such as ISO 9001) compliance and procedures.
* Deep understanding of health & safety requirements in a laboratory setting.
* Excellent organisational skills, with a track record of streamlining lab operations.
* Strong technical skills and hands-on experience with laboratory equipment and processes, including the ability to troubleshoot issues.
* Experience managing, mentoring, or training teams.
* Adaptability and resilience to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic startup environment.
* Experience within the Biotechnology or Medical Device industry.
* Experience working under a quality management system (QMS).
* Hands-on experience with specialised laboratory equipment such as microscopes, liquid handling robots and fluidic control systems.
* Knowledge of sustainable laboratory practices (e.g., waste reduction or energy efficiency).
