Key activities
This role will manage the civil and structural engineering and design development, working alongside a team of in-house specialist engineers with elements outsourced to subconsultants. Typical civil and structural work includes engineering buildings / structures and foundations, drainage systems, highways access, site temporary / permanent roadways, utilities / services distribution, solar superstructures etc.
The role will join an established Engineering Team, whose work spans a diverse range of innovative renewable energy generation and energy efficiency. This brings opportunities to gain experience in a rapidly growing market, working on pioneering low carbon schemes.
1. To lead the civil and structural design and engineering development of utility-scale renewable energy projects, from early concept through the construction phases. This will include the early design development, design calculations, coordination, interrogation, validation and optimisation of civil and structural design, liaison with specialist consultants and engineering teams to ensure coordination of design with concomitant designs and site constraints driven by other disciplines i.e. electrical / mechanical / public health design, ecology and soft landscaping, archaeology etc.
2. To manage and maintain design technical compliance with Employer's Requirements, statutory requirements and relevant design standards.
3. To 'project manage' the civil and structural design process.
4. To develop conceptual designs, design / performance specifications and outline scopes of work, to enable commissioning of detailed design, design & build contract specifications and specialist consultancy support. Liaise with procurement teams to provide technical advice in the appraisal and selection of supply-chains.
5. As and when required, progress to detailed / technical design and preparation of technical specifications for civil and structural design elements.
6. Lead the commissioning of insourced / outsourced design and specialist consultancy, through the preparation of technical briefs, design scopes and performance specifications. Liaise closely with design managers of other disciplines to ensure coordination and interfacing of design scopes.
7. To manage relevant statutory processes and coordinate preparation of relevant applications.
8. Interrogate and optimise civil and structural designs. Identify cost efficiencies and undertake cost/benefit assessments on potential value-engineering opportunities.
9. Assist in the delivery of Construction Design & Management Principal Designer duties, including but not limited to the preparation of Pre-Construction Information, appraisal of Designer's Risk Assessments, preparation of Hazard Assessments and identification / implementation of mitigations.
10. Assist in the development of Commissioning Plans, Integrated Test Plans, Quality Acceptance Test Plans etc. Interrogate commissioning records and conduct quality inspections from time to time.
11. Liaise with clients to refine project briefs, project objectives, constraints and requirements, to aid in the development of engineering options. To present engineering proposals and business cases. It is expected that these activities will be supported by other members of the engineering team.
