Are you a highly motivated individual looking to step into management and progress within your aquaculture career? We have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Hatchery Manager to join the Company’s new broodstock facility at Ardessie. The role is challenging, but ultimately very rewarding and can lead to a variety of fulfilling career progression opportunities.
Broodstock production is an area within salmon farming which has and continues to be subject to rapid development and innovation in areas including genetic selection, process automation, nutrition, water quality and veterinary health. Within this role you can be a part of this new frontier within the industry helping drive optimal biological performance of the farmed stocks which will play a very significant part in overcoming the challenges salmon farming faces.
If you are ambitious and motivated and want to work with a likeminded team, then this is the role for you. The successful candidate will be required to work 40 hours per week or an average of 40 hours where your shift pattern rotates over more than one week. The successful candidate will also be expected to be part of a weekly alarm rota and will be required to stay on site when on call providing 24 hour cover. Accommodation is available in Ullapool as well as transport options to and from Ullapool and Ardessie.
About the job
This role is a crucial part of the operations process and ensures that the best management of our salmon is undertaken. We need our Assistant Managers to strive for continuous improvement and deliver on all aspects of farm work to keep the team on track and performing well. The job includes, but is not limited to:
* Deputising in the absence of the Farm Manager
* Responsible for all aspects of farm operations
* Planning and managing fish handling operations, including grading, maturation checks, spawning, egg fertilisation and egg sorting.
* Operation and maintenance of the Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS).
* Maintaining the highest standards in fish husbandry and welfare
* Helping to develop and train a motivated and effective team
* General farm tasks to keep the whole operation running

Requirements
Ideal candidate
The ideal candidate should currently be a Hatchery Technician or have an interest in the aquaculture industry and be willing to learn. They will be willing to expand their understanding and work hard on the job.
* A degree in Biological sciences, or equivalent, is advantageous
* Previous experience in broodstock operations.
* Flexible approach to working to meet the demands of the job
* High degree of computer literacy is essential.
* A positive attitude and willingness to learn
* Ability to understand the aims of the site and to support the rest of the team to achieve these
* Respect for the need for safe working practices
