Job summary We are looking forward to appointing suitable candidates (ST5 / post-MRCS or equivalent) in the post of 'Specialist Doctor in General and Emergency Surgery'. An interest and specialist experience in Lower GI surgery will be looked upon favourably with our aim to appoint a doctor in each speciality. The appointee will contribute to provision of Daytime emergency general surgery cover at West Cumberland Hospital on a 1:4 rota, including weekend mornings, as the senior decision maker. The appointee will also contribute to provision of emergency general surgery at the Cumberland Infirmary on a 1:12 rota in a role equivalent to "Consultant of the Week" and on a 1:24 rota to cover Consultant Weekend and Week nights on call. The appointee must therefore be able to work autonomously to a level of defined competencies as agreed within local clinical governance frameworks and to include managing an unselected General surgery emergency "take" at a level equivalent to a Consultant.The appointee will have the back up of a Consultant Surgeon at all times when on call at the Cumberland Infirmary There will be a requirement to cover clinics and theatre / day case surgery lists at West Cumberland Hospital (WCH), Whitehaven on a weekly basis. Duties will include ward management of elective surgery patients, advice on in-patients under the care of other specialties on that site and assessment of emergency admissions/ A&E patients when on call. Elective General Surgery: The surgeon will have weekly access to operating lists at West Cumberland hospital when not on call. Routine procedures will include laparoscopic and open hernia repairs, abdominal wall hernia repairs (primary and incisional), laparoscopic cholecystectomy including a Cepod list for urgent cases. In addition specialist coloproctology cases and specialist upper GI cases may be suitable for an appropriately experienced surgeon. Endoscopy: The surgeon will have access to regular endoscopy lists in upper or lower GI procedures depending on their experience. Support may be offered for further training with a view to achieving JAG accreditation Emergency Surgery: WCH To join the existing team providing senior surgical cover for assessment and management of General surgical emergencies at West Cumberland Hospital. This may involve admitting stable patients under their care at WCH or transferring patients who may need escalation of treatment to Carlisle. Simple emergency procedures such as appendicectomy, cholecystectomy or drainage of abscesses may be performed at WCH if circumstances allow In addition the surgeon may be expected to offer advice or surgical intervention for other specialities ( Gynaecology and Urology) if called to attend cases in the operating theatre during the day.
