We are seeking to appoint a committed and dynamic EAL teacher who can deliver inspirational lessons across all aspects of the curriculum to our EAL students. Based in our dedicated Academic Support and EAL department, the successful candidate will have the ability to motivate, enthuse and influence our students, to ensure optimum levels of student learning and achievement across Key Stages 3, 4 and 5. They will also be required to play an active role in the extra-curricular activities run by the Faculty and/or elsewhere in the school.
Reporting to the EAL Coordinator, the primary focus of this post will be:
Planning, Management and Teaching:
Teach allocated pupils 1:1 and in small groups to achieve progression of learning through:
Identifying clear teaching objectives and specifying how they will be taught and assessed; this will include EAL-specific programmes, such as PET, FCE and CAE, and helping students to achieve the IELTS grades necessary for their onwards education.
Setting tasks which are multi-sensory, achievable to build confidence and consolidate learning;
Challenging pupils and ensuring high levels of interest;
Liaising with class teachers and other professionals, such as other Academic Support teachers or Class Teachers to help the progress of the EAL students;
Providing clear structures for lessons maintaining pace, motivation and challenge; providing opportunities for over-learning;
Planning successful use of assessment and ensuring coverage of programmes of study;
Delivering effective multi-sensory teaching with a range of resources and best use of available time;
Monitoring and intervening to ensure sound learning and discipline.
Monitoring, Assessment, Recording, Reporting:
Assess how well learning objectives have been achieved and use them to improve future teaching;
Working with the EAL Coordinator to help develop a programme of support for our EAL students.
Working with the EAL Coordinator to help to guide SLT on the suitability of prospective EAL students.
Working closely with the Boarding Houseparents to ensure that boarding students are appropriately supported during their supervised prep sessions. Providing guidance to subject teachers to help support these students at this time.
Advising any student who require to sit the IELTS qualification, or similar, and providing guidance on how to study to achieve the required level.
Mark and monitor pupils’ work according to the marking policy and set targets for progress;
Assess and record pupils’ progress systematically and keep records to check work is understood and completed, monitor strengths and weaknesses, inform planning and recognise the level at which the pupil is achieving;
Prepare and present informative reports to parents.
