An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Breast Advanced Clinical Practitioner to Lead the Macmillan Breast Nurse Practitioner Team. We are seeking an experienced Advanced Clinical Practitioner in Breast Care with excellent communication and leadership skills.
You will lead and manage the Nurse practitioner team with service and personal development, while working alongside the Breast Consultant and Cancer Nurse Specialist teams to provide patients with a seamless service through diagnosis into treatment.
You will be supported in this role by our Lead Breast Consultant and Head of Nursing.
Ideally you will be trained to MSc level in Clinical Breast Examination and history taking with experience in symptomatic clinics essential to the role. You will also have experience in communicating benign biopsy results to patients.
Proven leadership, teaching and a portfolio of service development will be an advantage if applying for this role.
Experience in providing community teams with advice and guidance, providing long term follow-up of post treatment breast cancer patients and answering support calls for patients on supported self-management is desirable, but training is available to meet these requirements.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be an integral member of the Breast Care team working collaboratively with nursing, midwifery and allied healthcare professionals undertaking advanced roles and responsibilities traditionally the remit of junior medical staff under the direction of the Consultant in charge of the patients care.
The Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) will work within agreed protocols and guidelines exercising independent judgement in history taking, examination, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of a diverse caseload of patients.
The ACP will act as a professional resource for the multi-professional teams, patients and carers. They will ensure that evidence-based practice is inherent in all aspects of care and treatment and ensure this knowledge is disseminated throughout the clinical area, across the Trust and externally as appropriate.
The ACP will triage referrals either independently or with medical, therapy or other ACP colleagues and make onward referrals in line with Trust policies.
A minimum of 70% of time must be spent in clinical practice.

Job responsibilities
To accept clinical responsibility for undertaking the comprehensive assessment of a caseload of patients, including those with a complex presentation, in line with evidence-based practice, legislation, policies and procedures. Using investigative and analytical skills; review and interpret all information available, utilising a systematic process of reasoning to make a differential diagnosis.
Provide treatment plans for patients that are consistent with the outcome of assessment and the most probable diagnosis using current clinical pathways where required in order to facilitate timely, quality patient care and/or appropriate onward referral.
Where appropriate, initiate diagnostic tests, interpret and act upon results and provide advice to members of the multidisciplinary team on patient treatment. Evaluate the effectiveness of interventions/treatments and make any necessary modifications.
Practice autonomously; in planning and implementing treatment and care undertaking advanced clinical practice that has been agreed with the senior nursing, midwifery, therapy and medical teams within the specialty.
To use an extended scope of practice beyond own profession recognising any limitations in knowledge, referring to senior medical staff or Advanced Practitioners when scope of practice is exceeded.
Maintain a safe environment for patients, relatives and staff, and adhere to infection prevention and control policies.
To accept referrals from and make referrals to consultants, GPs, and other healthcare professionals. Review the patient and act accordingly, thereby reducing length of time patients wait for intervention.
Improve the quality of the patient experience by identifying and meeting the individual clinical needs of patients. Act at all times in the patients' best interests and as a patient advocate.
Provide specialist advice on patient care to the healthcare team and act as a specialist resource within the service and other areas within the Trust.
To support specialist nurses through working alongside them in the clinical area as required. To develop nurse-led initiatives to allow service improvement and succession planning.
To make recommendations for improvements in the provision and delivery of cancer care across all the cancer and palliative care related specialities.
Produce an annual report to showcase key achievements including clinical activity, research and audit, patient feedback and education activity.
Makes sure that people affected by cancer are aware that they are interacting with a Macmillan Professional and know the full range of resources and services available through Macmillan.
Actively engage with Macmillan Cancer Support to contribute expertise and experience and support the Macmillan priorities.
Person Specification
Skills
* Able to meet physical demands of patient interaction and examination.
* Flexibility and ability to cover shift patterns including weekends and Bank Holidays.
* Ability to travel between sites.
Training & Qualifications
* Registration on relevant part of the register with the NMC or HCPC with no restrictions on practice.
* Recognised Teaching & Assessing Qualification.
* Degree in Nursing.
* Has or working towards master's degree.
* A specialist knowledge/qualification in Breast Cancer care and advanced practice.
* Post graduate management/leadership qualification or willingness to undertake.
* Counselling qualification.
* Independent Non-Medical Prescribing (V300).
Experience
* Highly developed specialist experience across a wide range of emergency care procedures that is underpinned by theory and continued knowledge and skills through CPD.
* Comprehensive knowledge of current NHS cancer and nursing issues, standards and performance standards.
* Evidence of coaching/facilitation skills.
* Evidence of leading staff development and empowerment.
* Evidence of involvement in policy and protocol development and implementation and ability to influence service changes.
* Evidence of excellent clinical reasoning/clinical decision making.
* Experience in specialist or practitioner nursing post at Band 7 with knowledge and skills that can be accredited or mapped against the essential criteria of this role.
