Senior Clinical Fellow Gastroenterology
NHS Medical & Dental: Senior Clinical Fellow
Job overview
The Senior Clinical Fellow will be a valued team member, participating in in-patient and outpatient care of gastroenterology and general medical patients. The post-holder is expected to participate in ward-rounds and multi-disciplinary team meetings.
You will work under the supervision of the Gastroenterology Consultants, usually based on the Preston Site, but may be asked to cover duties at the Chorley site when required. Opportunities to see in-patient Gastroenterology referrals and attend specialist out-patient clinics are available. When not covering the wards, the successful applicant would be expected to attend a wider number of specialty clinics as well as endoscopy sessions. This fixed-term post will provide good training in Gastroenterology with exposure to some tertiary specialist services.
Main duties of the job
This role will form a key part of the gastroenterology team. The post-holder is expected to participate in ward-rounds and ward multi-disciplinary team meetings. There are near-daily Consultant ward rounds providing ample opportunities for teaching and development on a dedicated Gastroenterology ward.
There are a variable number of outlying medical patients who are shared between existing medical teams. Opportunities to see in-patient Gastroenterology referrals and attend specialist out-patient clinics such as Viral Hepatitis, Nutrition and Hepatology are available. When not covering the wards, the successful applicant would be expected to attend clinics as well as endoscopy sessions. This post will provide training in Gastroenterology with exposure to some tertiary specialist services.
The post will have a GIM on-call element acting at registrar level if the applicant has attained the appropriate experience and competence. There are 2 parallel middle grade rotas (tiers 1 and 2) and the post holder will be a member of 1 (depending on experience). Duties will comprise those expected of an on-call medical registrar (managing acutely unwell patients admitted under the department of medicine, seeing urgent referrals for medical problems in patients on surgical wards, and providing advice and support for a number of more junior trainees).
Working for our organisation
The gastroenterology department manages inpatients on ward 24 at RPH (32 beds) and Brindle ward at Chorley hospital (15 beds). There are often medical outliers on the Preston site which are under the care of the gastroenterology team. We provide a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services for all gastrointestinal conditions.
We are the upper GI oesophago-gastric cancer centre for the region, as well as an accredited centre for bowel cancer screening. We have regular interventional lists for Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography and endoluminal stenting with the support of GI Radiologists. We also perform Endoscopic Ultrasound for the assessment and staging of upper GI tumours, and both benign and malignant hepatopancreatobiliary disease. Video capsule endoscopy is routinely performed for outpatients and inpatients with intestinal bleeding. We have Joint Advisory Group accredited endoscopy units at both Chorley and Preston. We are a spoke site for the North West endoscopy academy, regularly delivering JAG accredited endoscopy courses.
We offer seven day endoscopy cover with dedicated inpatient lists at the weekend to care for patients with GI bleeding and other serious problems.
The multidisciplinary nutrition service manages intestinal failure and other complex nutritional problems in both primary and secondary care. Our central vascular access team supports the placement, management and removal of indwelling vascular access devices.
