Senior Clinical Fellowship in Emergency General Surgery
A full time post as a Senior Clinical Fellow in Emergency Surgery is available at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
The post will be for a term of 1 year, with the option of extension for a further 1 year, subject to agreement.
Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has one of the largest Emergency General Surgery Units in the UK.
The Surgical Emergency Unit (SEU) comprises a surgical triage area, 54 dedicated emergency surgery beds, a surgical ambulatory care unit, access to emergency general surgery theatres with timely and appropriate access to all diagnostic services.
The SEU team receives support from 14 Consultant General Surgeons, 11 surgical ST3+ grades, 10 surgical CT grades and 72 FY1 grades.
The SEU Fellows provide senior surgical input to emergency general surgery and abdominal trauma patients at all stages of the emergency surgery and trauma pathways from initial triage and assessment to surgery and post-operative care.

The post-holder will work primarily on the Surgical Emergency Unit (SEU) and in the Emergency General Surgery Theatres on a shift system to provide senior input to general surgical emergency and major abdominal trauma patients.
The post-holder will be required to participate in, and lead, programmes for teaching medical students, training junior doctors and in the facilitation of clinical examinations.
Active participation in weekly academic meetings, lectures and journal clubs will be actively encouraged.
The unit is actively involved in research programmes where it takes the lead in many areas. There will be extensive opportunities to be involved in research and audit with the likelihood of publication.
The successful applicant will be expected to be involved in the organisation of the Annual Oxford Emergency General Surgery Conference.
The post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical:
The post-holder will work primarily on the Surgical Emergency Unit (SEU) and in the Emergency General Surgery Theatres.
The SEU is actively developing ambulatory care in the acute surgical patient and the post-holder will be involved in leading and running this unit.
Teaching:
The post-holder will be required to participate in, and lead, programmes for teaching medical students, training junior doctors and in the facilitation of clinical examinations.
Active participation in weekly academic meetings, lectures and journal clubs will be actively encouraged.
Clinical Governance:
The post-holder will participate in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, and quality improvement activities.
Research and Audit:
The unit is actively involved in research programmes. There will be extensive opportunities to be involved in research and audit with the likelihood of publication.
Personal and Professional Development:
The post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice.
Management:
The post-holder will be required to work within the Trust’s management policies and procedures.
Administrative Responsibilities:
The post-holder will undertake the administrative duties associated with the clinical duties outlined above.
Person specification
Qualifications/Training
* GMC
* FRCS or equivalent
* In year ST 7/8 of General Surgical training or equivalent
* CCST in General Surgery or within six months of achieving CCST at the time of interview.
* Additional experience in emergency and trauma surgery. Interest in research with publications.
Experience
* Hospital appointment at ST6/7 level or equivalent
* General training in general surgery and emergency/trauma surgery.
* General training in minimally invasive surgery
* Responsibility intermediate between Consultant and ST6/7
* Advanced training in minimally invasive surgery
* Advanced training in emergency general and trauma surgery
Skills and Knowledge
* Ability to Lead and Organise junior staff on the Surgical Emergency Unit
* Computing skills: ability to use standard programmes
* Experience of teaching undergraduates and trainees
* Experience of clinical audit
