The Royal Naval Benevolent Trust was established in 1922 to help non-commissioned sailors, Marines and their families. From the first day of service, we provide individual grants and regular charitable payments to help towards living expenses and life’s essentials. In times of distress, we offer financial assistance, signposting and advice. We provide care, support and housing to our older veterans living in our two care homes and Almshouse accommodation.
Pembroke House is a purpose-built care home for veterans of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines in Gillingham, Kent that was converted from an orphanage in 1952. We have been serving Royal Navy and Royal Marines veterans and their dependants for 70 years. Our residents and staff enjoy a varied yet familiar way of life to encourage independence and give each day meaning and purpose. It has a ‘family-run’ feel and we have carefully created a supportive, friendly and close-knit team making it a unique and very special place to work.
The Job Role
To provide high quality maintenance support in conjunction with the Facilities Manager and Maintenance Assistant to contribute to the provision of a safe caring and working environment to PH residents, PH staff, visitors, and contractors.
To work alongside the Facilities Manager to provide comprehensive maintenance and support to the service.
All duties will be carried out within health and safety guidelines.
The Person
Should have effective communication skills, written & verbal (including telephone skills), have the ability to input accurately to electronic information systems, and the ability to work as part of a team, be flexible & adaptable to meet competing priorities and changing working practices.
Key Responsibilities
* The focus on this role is working with the heads of departments to ensure day-to-day delivery of excellence in quality of service within a safety conscious environment.
* To work alongside the external contractor to ensure that all elements of PPM and reactive maintenance are carried out in a timely manner.
* To liaise with external contractors on work needed to be carried out within the home.
* To support the Facilities Manager with Health & Safety and Fire Safety.
* To act on defects reported in the defect logs in a timely manner.
* To conduct regular fire alarm tests in accordance with regulations.
* To maintain accurate and detailed records.
* To conduct health and safety audits in accordance with regulations.
* To ensure that annual maintenance and calibration is carried out.
* To ensure compliance with PH policy regarding PAT testing in the home.
* To participate in the planned maintenance of the home.
* To advise senior management on compliance issues.
* Participate in the audit process, weekly and monthly.
* To develop positive working relationships with all home staff and outside agencies to promote effective working.
* To report complaints made by residents, families, or guardians to the manager.
* Be aware of, and always comply with RNBT’s and Pembroke House policies and procedures and all relevant statutory responsibilities including fire arrangement, health and safety issues including moving and handling, COSHH regulations, maintaining records diligently and accurately as required.
* To undertake training to ensure professional development and awareness of current regulatory requirements in relation to areas of work.
* To take monthly readings of all meters (e.g. Gas & Water).
* To monitor the Waste Management contractor and report any issues.
* The above list of tasks is not exhaustive and other duties that are commensurate with the level of the post may be required at the request of the RNBT, Home Manager and central HR and finance.
