About our Team
The Major Reference Works editorial team is responsible for commissioning and publishing ground-breaking Major Reference Works in key areas of science to meet customer needs. Recruiting global subject matter experts as editors to lead individual titles, our reference works are broad and provide comprehensive coverage. They are the perfect one-stop solution for undergraduates, postgraduates, and early career researchers looking to expand their knowledge.
About the Role
Responsible for the editorial strategy, acquisition, and ownership/management of a portfolio of Major Reference Works in a specified subject area.
Responsibilities
* Acquiring and developing commercially attractive Major Reference Works in their respective subject area.
* Identifying and developing revisions from successful backlist titles to meet market needs.
* Creating appropriate proposals and financials for internal approval.
* Recruiting and hiring Editors-in-Chief for Major Reference Works and collaborating with them to create appropriate editorial boards.
* Negotiating contracts with Editors-in-Chief.
* Partnering with the MRW Operations team to ensure timely and in-scope publication of contracted titles.
* Participating and leading initiatives/internal projects to improve day-to-day workflows and outcomes, connecting across business groups to drive innovation.
* Developing close relationships with and providing direct support to the Sales and commercial teams (where appropriate).
* Supporting the Publisher and Publishing Director in reviewing and responding to potential business opportunities for MRWs.
Requirements
* Experience in academic publishing, preferably editorial; understanding of academic markets, strategic planning, content acquisitions, and author management; working with both print and digital content.
* Proven ability to network and build strong relationships across internal and external partners, with strong communication and negotiation skills.
* Track record of meeting goals and actively participating in process improvements.
* Innovative, thoughtful approach to author management and product development.
* Basic to advanced understanding of utilizing market data and customer research to develop and refine publishing and project plans.
* Goal-driven, process-oriented approach to develop and improve on processes, systems, and go-to-market execution.
* Comfort working in a matrix organization and interest in the challenge of building new programs.
