SSEN Transmission, part of the SSE Group, is recruiting for a Marine Consents & Environment Manager (MCEM) or an Assistant MCEM within the Consents and Environment team, dependent on the level of qualification and experience of applicants for the role.
The key duties & responsibilities will include:
1. Successful applicants will be responsible for developing and consenting some of the most significant subsea cable infrastructure in Europe, working at the leading edge of project development, consenting and environmental management. Your role in delivering electricity transmission infrastructure will help shape the future of the UK and Europe's energy transmission infrastructure and be a key part in delivering the UK's 2030 goals.
2. The MCEM team works on a range of projects from short interisland cables to several hundred-kilometre long HVDC systems and offshore platforms. The size and complexity of projects and the level of autonomy allocated to each member of the team is commensurate with their experience and will increase as their experience grows.
3. Alongside the development and consenting of subsea cables, the MCEM team leads on the development of marine habitat restoration projects. SSEN Transmission has committed to 10% Biodiversity Net Gain across all its projects and the MCEM team provides guidance to the business on how to deliver this habitat restoration in the marine environment.
4. Applicants require a detailed understanding of the marine environment and the systems and species within it. They will have experience in the subsea cable or offshore renewables sectors, including site selection, consenting and installation processes. Candidates are required to show demonstrable experience working in the marine environmental industry, either through appropriate academic qualifications or practical work experience.
5. Marine works take place 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We operate an on-call system to support our marine projects and require a commitment from individuals to be available when marine operations are taking place. Travel is required, occasionally at short notice, to attend work sites and vessels with potential for working in offshore environments. While the company encourages the use of public transport and shared car travel, candidates are expected to be able to travel independently to meet these needs when required.
To be considered for this role, we would love applicants to have the following:
1. A very strong understanding of marine regulatory regimes and legislation, their purpose and how they interact with offshore development, particularly in the Scottish context. You should be able to assess a project from initial design and determine how best to license each project stage and be able to independently manage this process with regulatory stakeholders.
2. Excellent understanding of marine survey data such as bathymetry, side-scan sonar and sub-bottom profiling, including how to interpret these in relation to marine habitats, protected features and impact mitigation.
3. Candidates should be able to communicate clearly and concisely to a range of stakeholders across various disciplines and have the confidence to challenge project team members at different seniority levels where appropriate. They should also have a good ability to work independently and take initiative in the delivery of workloads.
4. Candidates must have the ability to think critically and plan strategically, utilizing personal and team experience to support a project, assessing information and determining its value and importance.
5. Excellent written English is essential, including the ability to write and review technical documents to a high professional standard, ensuring that the content is concise and technically correct. Candidates will be competent in drafting and reviewing reports and impact assessments and will be experienced in commissioning and undertaking work to EIA standards. Experience in internal ISO compliant environmental auditing is valued.
