The Medical Microbiology Department at Calderdale Royal Hospital is keen to recruit an enthusiastic and highly motivated senior biomedical scientist with a focus on quality and patient safety.
The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator with strong leadership skills. They will be HCPC registered, with an MSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent. Applications will also be considered if you are working towards a Master's Degree or Higher Specialist Diploma.
The department is committed to quality and improvement and is UKAS accredited and IBMS approved for training.
Main duties of the job
1. To work closely with the laboratory manager and other senior staff to maintain an efficient and effective department with high morale and standards of in-service training.
2. To deputise for the Microbiology laboratory manager if required and be responsible for monitoring all aspects of the pathology quality management system within the Microbiology laboratory.
3. To be responsible for all aspects of training and competency and health and safety aspects within the Microbiology department in collaboration with the departmental manager and other senior staff.

Job responsibilities
1. To participate in all areas of Medical Microbiology to include, Enteric, Urine, Respiratory, Serology, Health and Safety and Quality.
2. To plan and assign work schedules and rotas, perform appraisals and monitor the performance of all subordinate staff in conjunction with the laboratory manager and head of the department.
Person Specification
QUALIFICATIONS / TRAINING
* HPC Registration
* In possession of or working towards relevant master's degree or Higher Specialist Diploma in Biomedical Science/Microbiology/Virology/Healthcare management or related subjects that is suitable for the post.
* Fellowship examination of The Institute of Biomedical Sciences and/or Post Registration training (specialist post-graduate portfolio or Higher Specialist Diploma)
* Certificate in Healthcare Management or equivalent
KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & EXPERTISE
* Extensive post registration experience in Microbiology
* Experience of working as part of a team
* Significant recent experience in leadership, supervision and training of Biomedical Support Workers and Trainee BMS's.
* Demonstrate a commitment to and participation in continued professional development and create own personal development plan.
* Trained in all areas of the Microbiology department
* Knowledge of the specimen pathways for all samples, including reference laboratory tests.
* Significant theoretical and practical knowledge of Microbiology protocols.
* Knowledge of recent developments related to area of responsibility.
* Ability to run, maintain and fault find on laboratory equipment.
* Ability to problem solve.
* Experience of budgets.
* Member of a professional body CPD scheme.
* Full involvement in laboratory and clinical audit.
* Perform personal development review on members of the team.
* Knowledge and participation in health and safety, clinical governance, quality management and accreditation including UKAS.

* Ability to work under pressure and plan and manage workload.

Salary: £46,148 to £52,809 a year, pro rata.
