Job Description
The Defence Fuels Technical Authority (DFTA) is responsible to OEA DH Ops for providing technical subject matter expertise, advice and guidance to all levels (MOD, Commands, Operational HQs, Units and fielded-Forces) to ensure that the quality and standard of all Fuels, Oils, Lubricants and Gases provisioned, transported, stored and used by MOD Armed Forces are of an acceptable standard and fit for purpose. It is also responsible for representing Defence at all relevant technical, industry, national and international meetings and forums to influence the development of the specifications for Fuels, Lubricants and Associated Products (FLAP), and for maintaining awareness regarding the direction of travel for all FLAP product standards and specifications as anticipated by users and producers including sustainable aviation fuels.
Further responsibilities include the management of all relevant Defence Standards for FLAP and influencing the content of future standards and specifications and providing advice and guidance regarding the changing specifications for, and issues affecting the use of, critical consumable FLAP products; implicit in this is the provision of advice and guidance to Project Teams, Front Line Commands (FLCs) and wider Defence stakeholders. Finally, and importantly, the DFTA is responsible for providing the necessary Suitably Qualified & Experienced Personnel (SQEP), linkages and support mechanisms to enable OEA DH Ops to fulfil the Duty Holder-Facing role.
Responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to:
* Providing Air Technical SME support to contingency planning, Military Strategic Planning and Strategic Command of Ops.
* Provide Air Technical SME direction and guidance for Ops at both the operational (HQ) level and tactical (User Unit) level as necessary.
* Contribute to the assurance of coherence of all UK Doctrine on Fuels, Lubricants and Associated products by providing Aviation Technical SME input as necessary.
* Sponsor and review of Defence Standard specifications for Aviation FLAP as necessary.
* Contribute to and participate in international military fuels and lubricants Committees and forums related to interoperability, in particular NATO and AFIC.
* Contribute to the development of National Fuel and Lubricant Concepts.
* Contribute to and participate in national and international committees related to specification and test method development, in particular ASTM, SAE, CRC and IATA.
* Contribute to the identification and management of Capability risks and issues for Current Operations, Standing Tasks and Contingency Capability.
* Contribute to the collation and management of Defence Fuels, Lubricants and Associated Products risks and issues for Ops and the management of such Risks and Issues within Commands.
Essential Criteria
Degree in Chemistry or relevant scientific subject, or HND/HNC in Chemistry plus 3 years laboratory experience is essential.
Experience in fuels and lubricants laboratory analysis techniques.
A broad understanding of the fuels, lubricants and associated products industry, and the properties and chemistry of such products.
Qualifications
