EXTEND
This role is advertised as part of our BBC Extend programme for disabled people. ABOUT THE TEAM:
Commercial Digital are a multi-function delivery team focused on delivery of world class direct-to-consumer and business-to-business solutions within BBC Studios. We are a small agile team delivering big change. Our products include a number of marquee brands including BBC.com, BBC Select and Top Gear as well as a number of market-leading B2B products.

THE ROLE
We are looking for an experienced Software Engineer for our WordPress CMS platform to support, deliver and maintain a major, enhanced News based Direct-to-Consumer service. We are looking for someone who can join the team to create a performant, accessible and operationally excellent system offering great user experience.
* Designing and implementing new features and functionality for WordPress-based websites and applications.
* Writing and maintaining efficient, reusable, and reliable code.
* Extending WordPress functionality through plugins, custom post types, and custom fields.
* Integrating WordPress sites with third-party systems such as CRMs, analytics, and marketing automation.
* Participating in peer code reviews and ensuring code quality standards are met.
* Troubleshooting and resolving issues throughout the product life cycle.
* Participate in the teams agile planning and delivery process.
* Work with project, product and technical leads to design software and create implementable specifications and tasks at feature and component level.
* Work with third party providers where necessary offering direction, support, and documentation.
WHAT DOES IT TAKE?
Key Criteria:
* Custom Development – Experience creating custom blocks, developing WordPress plugins, and integrating REST APIs with third-party systems.
* Performance & Security – Knowledge of optimisation techniques for high-performing, scalable, resilient, and secure websites, including performance monitoring and testing.
* Problem-Solving & Debugging – Excellent debugging and troubleshooting skills, ensuring seamless functionality and issue resolution.
* Testing & Technical Translation – Expertise in test-driven development, broader testing/QA concerns, and the ability to translate product requirements into technical solutions.
* A degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
* Familiarity with WordPress best practices and APIs.
* Experience working on multiple projects or codebases concurrently.
* Ability to support and collaborate with less experienced team members.
* Exposure to working on a global product or news-related projects.

Band: C
Salary: Up to £53,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights. London Weighting will be added on top of the base salary (£5,319).
Location: London TVC (Hybrid)
