BBC Scotland Operations are looking for an experienced news director to work across all of our news & current affairs television output including Reporting Scotland on BBC 1 Scotland and a new programme on BBC Scotland, Reporting Scotland News at 7. You will also have the opportunity to work on our political output, The Sunday Show and Politics Scotland. The news directors within BBC Scotland also have the chance to work on election coverage and special debates.
As a result of a studio refresh, we have been devoting more effort towards graphics-led story telling.
BBC Scotland's News and Current Affairs department delivers high-quality journalism on Radio, TV, Online, and Social to audiences across Scotland and beyond.
PLEASE NOTE: This role includes shift and weekend working.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
You will be required to direct live and pre-recorded programmes or inserts for NCA Scotland programmes in automated galleries and on location.
Directors co-ordinate the planning and production of television news programmes to ensure that editorial intentions are met and the highest production standards are maintained.
We are looking for a real team player who will be fully engaged with the production teams. You will be expected to contribute to editorial decision-making as well as produce ideas, play a key role in production planning, and give guidance and advice on story treatment in terms of production value, graphic design, and technical viability.
The successful candidate will use traditional craft and technical skills as well as new and developing technologies in order to produce the highest standard of news programmes. This role will be managed by a Lead News Director.
Knowledge, Skills, Training & Experience
We’re looking for someone who has an excellent eye for making interesting and entertaining television news programmes to an extremely high standard. You should have demonstrable experience in studio or location directing on live or recorded programmes and experience of live and recorded TV production.
You will need to be at ease with broadcast technology, including automation, digital technologies, and graphics-led story telling facilities.
You will have a broad knowledge of national and international news & current affairs as well as an awareness of editorial priorities and programme objectives.
