Job Description:
At QinetiQ, we are committed to leading the field in aviation innovation! We are excited to announce an exceptional opportunity for an experienced and qualified Rotary Wing Flight Test Engineer to join our ETPS team of instructors training aircraft testers at MOD Boscombe Down.
You will be part of a unique operational site that features the longest military runway in the UK, alongside other state-of-the-art facilities, such as The Night Vision test house, the environmental hangar and the UAS test hangar. This is not just a workplace; it’s a hub of innovation where you will collaborate with a highly experienced team of flight test instructors.
What you’ll be doing as a Rotary Wing Flight Test Engineer
As a Rotary Wing Flight Test Engineer, you will harness your expertise to deliver high quality instruction on a wide range of topics to aspiring flight test professionals.
Your instruction and teaching abilities will be crucial in ensuring that we continue to deliver world-class training to a wide range of students from around the world, while also contributing to a culture of collaboration and innovation within the team of highly qualified Flight Test Engineer Instructors (FTEIs), Test Pilot instructors (TPIs), and Theoretical Knowledge Instructors (TKIs).
You will have the opportunity to deliver and develop a range of long course and short course ground instruction and some in-flight instructional delivery to both Test Pilot and Flight Test Engineer students.
You will be assessing and grading ETPS student flying and technical reports as well as mentoring and providing constructive debriefing/feedback, thereby supporting and enhancing flight safety and student learning. You will play a leading role in the continuing high standards of aviation safety inherent in ETPS and QinetiQ Civil Flying Organisation (QCFO) flying operations.
There may be the opportunity to be involved with other test activities e.g. within QinetiQ’s Flight Test Organisation (QFTO) contributing to developing solutions that enhance the operational effectiveness of the UK’s defence capabilities.
You will have a willingness to travel in both the UK and overseas to participate in course activities as required.
What we are looking for in a Rotary Wing Test Engineer
* You have an Engineering or Science degree coupled with at least 3 years actively working as a LFTE or equivalent on a range of significant modern rotary wing flight test programmes. Or you are a Graduate Rotary Wing Flight Test Engineer from one of the 4 UK MoD-recognised Test Pilot Schools (ETPS, USNTPS, USAFTPS or EPNER) or equivalent standard thereof.
* You will contribute to the development of the ETPS course syllabi thus driving continuous improvement and possess broad and extensive experience within the flight test community.
* You will have the ability to teach on the ground and instruct in the air (FTEIs teach alongside TPIs in some airborne demo sorties) and possess the ability to clarify subject material that is inherently complex so that students of all nationalities can understand and then apply the associated principles.
* You will have a sound knowledge of aircraft performance, systems and stability & control and their testing together with skilled use of typical software for the analysis and reporting of data in the flight test environment.
* Experience of the UK MoD’s Defence Systems Approach to Training (DSAT).
