Transport Manager (Planning/Compliance)

We are looking to add to our team in the Transport Department. In return, the correct candidate will receive a competitive salary (dependant on experience £40K+); life insurance at 2½ times the salary; Company contributions to a pension (while ever you contribute); 20 days holidays per year, increasing by one day per year in years 6 to 10, to 25 days, plus eight statutory bank holidays; the opportunity for regular health assessments; entitlement to Company sick pay after two years employment.
The office is open from 7AM to 6PM Monday to Friday, with a shared rota of early and later start/finishes (7-5 or 8-6) and Saturday 7AM to Noon covered by one person, shared between the team.
In day-to-day operations, you will be part of the team:
1. Managing our drivers, matching their vehicles and trailers to the incoming work, planning collections and deliveries to work as efficiently as possible.
2. Providing drivers with clear and timely instructions on where the collection is to be made, what they are to move and where it is being delivered to, by when.
3. Using your knowledge to identify the best fit for the job and being flexible enough to shuffle work and schedules as live issues arise.
4. Monitoring driver performance using vehicle telematics and desktop software, ensuring defect recording, driving standards, and working time regulations are maintained.
5. Addressing performance issues with individuals where they fall short.
6. Overseeing the legal requirements of operating the vehicles and coordinating with our workshop.
7. Ensuring vehicle-related incidents are investigated and documented for learning and insurance purposes.
8. Meeting the requirements of FORS and applying their standards, potentially leading or contributing to audits.
9. Creating & delivering toolbox talks, drafting memos, scheduling driver e-learning, while continuing your own professional development as a Transport Manager.
10. Identifying elements of the job that can be delegated and those that require your involvement.
Customer interaction is key; you will deal with them on the phone, via email, and in person, managing enquiries, quoting for jobs, and planning & scheduling their loads.
To be successful in this role, we would like you to have:
1. Reasonable IT skills, with good knowledge of the road network.
2. Excellent communication skills.
3. The ability to organise the workload.
4. Ability to work as part of a team.
5. A minimum of three years prior experience in a transport office.
The following would also be an advantage, but are not essential:
1. A Transport Manager’s International CPC in Road Haulage.
2. A class 1 (CE) driving licence.
3. Experience and knowledge of abnormal loads.
4. Knowledge of some or all of the following: AbHaulier, Webfleet, Fleetcheck & FORS.
