Works Manager – Civil Engineering (Sizewell, Suffolk)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Works Manager to join our team onsite at Sizewell, Suffolk.
As a Works Manager, you will be responsible for managing and leading a multi-disciplinary team including Foremen, General Foremen, and Labour, to ensure the successful execution of large-scale civil engineering infrastructure projects. You will oversee the supervision of subcontractors and the direct workforce, ensuring the right resources are in place and used effectively to meet the project’s needs.
To be considered, you will have a strong background in civil engineering, ideally with experience working on large civils infrastructure projects with main contractors. A full UK driving licence is essential, as travel between sites is required.
Key Responsibilities:
* Ensure all subcontractors and operatives are put to work in a safe and organised manner, in accordance with health & safety legislation, client procedures, and approved RAMS.
* Promote and implement Zero Harm initiatives and behavioural safety practices, confidently stopping work if the 'safe system of work' is not being followed.
* Manage and reconcile resource levels against the cost plan, providing input into the monthly resource forecast according to the project’s schedule.
* Ensure daily checks and records are completed, with the right level of competent resources on-site to meet the programme.
* Oversee the hiring and off-hiring of plant in line with client and company standards, maintaining an accurate plant register.
* Be aware of environmental issues and ensure appropriate controls are in place for the project.
* Deliver site inductions, daily briefings, tool box talks, short interval control meetings, and task safety briefings to a high standard.
* Work closely with the site teams to develop, monitor, and adjust project programmes and outputs. Oversee site setup and mobilisation.
* Contribute to the site logistics plan and manage logistics throughout the project.
* Ensure materials are ordered, managed efficiently, and wastage is minimised while maintaining quality control.
* Produce comprehensive daily records, reports, and investigations as needed, and implement any necessary improvements.
* Brief all supervisors on company policies and ensure Black Hat assessments are carried out.
* Ensure accurate and timely submission of allocation sheets and maintain a detailed site diary.
* Mentor and support engineers and supervisors, undertaking additional duties as required.
* Adhere to company policies and procedures at all times.
Experience and Knowledge:
* Extensive experience in civil engineering works within regulated environments, such as rail, highways, or water sectors.
* Strong experience in earthworks, drainage, groundworks, and pavements, preferably within a highways environment.
* Proven ability to manage a range of works with both direct and subcontract workforce.
* Excellent Health & Safety awareness with a proven track record of managing sites with exceptional safety standards.
* Understanding of behavioural safety principles and a strong commitment to achieving the highest safety standards.
* Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with clients and stakeholders.
* Strong communication skills with the ability to think and act decisively under pressure.
Qualifications:
* Valid SMSTS certification.
* CSCS card.
* A current, valid UK driving licence.

* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
* Meticulous, organised, proactive, with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn.
* Self-motivated, enthusiastic, with excellent negotiation and interpersonal skills to manage relationships with suppliers, negotiate prices, and place orders.
* Strong people skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with all levels of personnel.
