Job overview
The Pre Operative Assessment Clinic (P.O.A) provides an important role in the appropriate assessment, preparation and optimisation of all adult elective surgical patients and in avoiding theatre delays and cancellations.
The aim is to deliver patient centered care, where patients are equipped with the correct level of knowledge and understanding based around the clinical history and associated co-morbidities, medications and medical and surgical history to help them make the most informed decision about what is right for them.
P.O.A. works in accordance with the latest national standards for best practice. Embracing new technologies and research, we are able to provide a diverse array services, especially around; pre-habilitation, diabetes management, weight management programmes, anti-coagulation therapies.
The role involves ascertaining a comprehensive, holistic patient assessment including medical and surgical history, current medicines and health status, physical examination, identification of any issues which may present as problematic during the peri-operative period and requesting appropriate further investigations or referrals. The post holder will be responsible for prescribing patients own medications onto EPMA and prescribing other medications required during the patient’s admission such as VTE prophylaxis and analgesia. It will also be necessary to prescribe pre operative anti coagulation bridging, antibiotics and bowel preparation where required.
Main duties of the job
The post holder is responsible and accountable for implementation of robust systems and processes that ensure there is a continuing improvement in the quality of the service provided to patients.
* Providing strong, visible clinical and professional nursing leadership
* For the safe preparation of elective patients for anaesthesia and surgery.
* Develop strong working relations with speciality teams to actively support and monitor the delivery of high-quality services.
* To provide a quality and safe service for patients within the unit, to identify and act upon risk factors which can be optimised prior to surgery
* Ensure effective recruitment and retention initiatives are implemented to ensure that bank and agency spend is kept to a minimum
* To provide emotional and educational support for patients prior to having surgery
* To reduce the rate of cancellation on day of, or near to date of surgery, to optimise theatre utilisation.
The post holder is accountable for the delivery of nursing clinical services within Preoperative Assessment Unit and to support the Matron Operational Manager with service improvements.
In collaboration with the Clinical Lead, will ensure that patient care is undertaken within National Guidelines, provided and supported by the Pre-Operative Association and Royal College of Anaesthetists.
Work with management teams within the variety of specialties to ensure the demands of their capacity are met safely.

* NMC Registration Nurse
* Diploma/degree in Nurse Studies or working towards
* Management experience and/or experience of leading a Team
