About the Department:
The Foundation began collecting art in 1990 with the goal of providing cultural and educational benefits to Foundation staff and guests through the display of contemporary art that speaks to the Foundation’s values and program areas. In building its collection, which numbers around 500 works, the Foundation focused on works by emerging artists, many from Chicago, art from areas of the world where the Foundation has had offices, and art by artists with non-traditional artistic training.
About the Internship:
This internship offers a unique opportunity for undergraduate or graduate students interested in art history, curatorial work, or museum studies. The intern will gain hands-on experience conducting art historical research and organizing a small exhibition, working alongside experienced professionals in a dynamic environment.
Key Responsibilities Include:
* Research: Conducting in-depth research on artists, artworks, and related topics, including historical, cultural, and theoretical contexts.
* Exhibition Planning: Development of an art exhibition, from concept generation to installation.
* Writing and Editing: Producing descriptive and explanatory texts, labels, and other written materials.
* Educational Programming: Developing and delivering a capstone presentation at the end of the internship to present to staff.
* Collections Management: Assisting with the care and management of the Foundation’s Art Collection.
Qualifications:
* Graduate students and undergraduate juniors and seniors are welcome to apply. The ideal candidate will have a background in the visual arts, art history, museum studies, or collections management and will have experience or interest in studying the impact of the visual arts on society.
* Strong research and writing skills.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
* Strong organizational and time management skills.
* Proficiency in relevant software applications, such as Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite.
