Job Description
Sound Roots is seeking a Managing Director to oversee financial administration, fundraising, operations, human resources, policies, procedures and the integration of EDI (Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion) across all aspects of the company's operations.
Sound Roots supports independent music careers, specialising in folk, roots and acoustic music genres. As a registered charity, we empower the sector through festivals, events, industry showcasing, mentoring and more. You can read about the history of the organisation here.
This role is ideal for someone experienced in managing a small remote team to deliver a large workload, with a talent for balancing financial oversight, operational efficiency and a passion for people in a niche area of the grassroots music sector.
Job Requirements
* Manage contracting and payments for freelance staff, artists, subscriptions, suppliers, and partners.
* Prepare management accounts, cash flow reports, audits, financial systems, and risk analyses.
* Lead Sound Roots' Income Generation Strategy and funding campaigns.
* Apply for funding from trusts and foundations with the Chief Executive's support.
* Engage donors, sponsors, and funders, sharing updates and inviting them to Sound Roots events.
* Line-manage PAYE and freelance staff, ensuring equality, diversity, and inclusion practices.
* Support the CEO, Trustees, and staff in implementing policies, procedures, and systems.
* Provide operational and administrative support for events, projects, and initiatives.
* Fulfil obligations related to funders, data protection, health and safety, and equality legislation.
* Integrate the Anti-Discrimination Action Plan into all activities.
* Act as Data Protection Officer, managing data and compliance.
* Report at quarterly board meetings.
Experience and Knowledge
* Strong management skills, providing support and inspiration.
* Proven track record in income generation from trusts, foundations, earned income, and donations.
* Experience in the UK music industry.
* Knowledge of HR policies and staff line management.
* Experience in financial management, budget oversight, and reporting.
* Expertise in setting, monitoring, and evaluating outcomes.
* Ability to develop policies ensuring legal and statutory compliance.
* Understanding of small company administrative needs.
* Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure.
* Experience in marketing and communication strategies.
* Proven ability to build and maintain partnerships.
Competencies and Skills
* Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
* Confidence in public speaking and advocacy.
* Networking and report writing for funders and Trustees.
* Ability to work in a small, dedicated team.
* Proficient in IT, including Xero, spreadsheets, and databases.
