The Edinburgh Geological Society is looking for a new Honorary Treasurer to support the work of the society in promoting public interest in geology and the advancement of geological knowledge.
This is a voluntary position, joining an existing Council of Trustees who oversee all aspects of the Society’s work, supported by a part-time paid Promotion Coordinator. Some familiarity with finance and accounting, particularly with respect to charities in Scotland, is preferred, along with a working knowledge of Excel, but no geological knowledge is required. This is a lively and friendly society, with a growing membership and varied programme of activities. All out-of-pocket expenses will be covered, and induction and support will be available, including hand-over from the current treasurer.
All Trustees are legally responsible for the charity and are expected to act in its best interests. You can read more about the general duties and obligations of being a trustee for a Scottish charity on the OSCR website www.oscr.org.uk/managing-a-charity/trustee-duties/. In return, we offer the opportunity to contribute to the work of a long-established and vibrant charity and gain experience in charity management.
The purpose of the job is to manage the finances of the Society, to be responsible for the payment and receipt of monies within the rules of the Society, to maintain accurate accounting records and prepare accounts and financial reports.
You will be expected to:
* Manage and record all income and expenditure.
* Report to (and attend where possible, mostly online) meetings of the Council and Finance and Planning Committee, approximately 6 times per year.
* Liaise with our External Examiner in preparing the annual accounts.
* Have oversight of the EGS investment portfolio and liaise with the investment managers.
The time commitment is approximately 2 hours per week throughout the year and more during September – January when the annual accounts are prepared. Ideally, you will take on the commitment of Honorary Treasurer for a period of 3-5 years. A more detailed job description is available on request.
If you are interested in applying for this position, please email Neil Mackenzie, EGS Secretary by 6 January 2025, setting out your experience and interest in the post. Informal enquiries and requests for further information are most welcome; don’t hesitate to get in touch.
