Description We have an exciting opportunity for a Lead Data Scientist to join the Data team. The Lead Data Scientist will play a major part in determining how we implement and develop our data strategy. They will bring expertise which will enable our colleagues to use data more effectively when making decisions, provide greater understanding of our audiences and utilize new technologies focusing on the use of Machine Learning, AI and other analytical techniques. This is a greenfield, hands-on role where you will have a real opportunity to shape the data strategy of UKTV and our ways of working across a range of different business areas. You will also be involved in sharing best practice and embedding a new data platform alongside our parent company, BBC Studios. Key experience, knowledge, skills & personal qualities Experience & Knowledge Ideal Substantial experience managing data scientists Proven experience in managing large scale data science projects from scoping to production Demonstrated experience using machine learning algorithms. Strong programming skills and statistical modeling experience (like Python or R) Familiarity with cloud-based data storage and analytics platforms (e.g. Snowflake, AWS, Azure, GCP) Strong knowledge of A/B testing, statistics and wider measurement & data analysis methodologies including digital analytics (e.g. Google, Adobe, Piano). Solid understanding of data and analytics engineering practices & technologies (e.g. dbt, AWS Glue, other ETL and reverse ETL tools) Desirable: Broadcast, production, start-up / scale-up or media/marketing/advertising experience and understanding of the broadcast, streaming and advertising industries Experience of applying data science in a commercial environment, particularly in a direct-to-consumer organisation. Experience of working with agencies Experience of agile working and product development Knowledge of adtech and martech, (particularly Customer Data Platforms and Data Clean Rooms) Skills & personal qualities Bachelor degree in mathematics, statistics, economics, computer science or related field; Master degree preferred OR similar knowledge gained through relevant experience. The ability to come up with solutions to loosely defined business problems by leveraging pattern detection over potentially large datasets. Proficiency in the use of statistical packages. Proficiency in statistical analysis, quantitative analytics, forecasting/predictive analytics, multivariate testing, and optimization algorithms. Strong attention to detail, great critical thinking skills and ability to work under pressure Demonstrates excellent people management and motivational skills Lives and role models UKTV’s values Key Responsibilities Development and delivery of production ready ML models to power targeted advertising on UKTV Play Development and delivery of propensity models to classify viewers for marketing campaigns Consumer Lifecycle Value modelling and analysis Forecasting business performance and involvement in target setting Ad hoc projects which will include understanding viewing behaviour including customer segmentations Provide insights and data products to support decision-making across the business (VOD, Linear TV, Marketing, Commercial etc) working in close collaboration with our Insight & Strategy teams Identify ways to improve data sources (e.g. metadata) and data quality using algorithmic techniques Stay up to date with industry trends and best practices in data science, analysis methods, data modelling, and visualization tools. Educates the organisation both from technology and the business perspectives on new approaches, such as testing hypotheses and statistical validation of results. Helps the organisation understand the principles and the maths behind data science processes to drive organisational buy-in Responsible for ensuring that the information used is in compliance with the regulatory and security policies in place On occasion you will get involved in pan-BBC projects which will involve leading projects and influencing outside of the UKTV teams. You will collaborate, share learnings, and influence peers with industry and sector expertise. This is likely to involve collaboration with the Data Science team at BBC Studios and the teams responsible for maintaining and developing the BBC Studios Data Platform. Lead, develop and motivate a small team dedicated to applying data science at UKTV. Anything else we feel we should tell/know you about the role/team This role leads one of two functions within the Data team, where you will work alongside the Lead Data Analyst (and draw significant input from the Insight team). The leads will collaborate to ensure alignment of how to use and interpret data & analysis in order to provide a holistic view of UKTV’s audiences. There will be some crossover in projects where there will be a need to draw on different areas’ specialisms. It will require strong working relationships, constant communication, and awareness of activity across the entire Insight, Data, and Strategy function as well as in other teams. You will spend a large proportion of your time problem solving and dealing with complex requests where no precedent is set. This will involve working with large data sets, managing multiple projects concurrently and translating complicated data into digestible formats to lead the conversation with a range of stakeholders.
