35-37 Monday – Friday, normal working hours
This opening assignment is for 5 months
City: DARLINGTON
Requirement for carrying out tree surveys/inspections, preparing maintenance programmes and updating the Authorities tree management system.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist the Senior Arboricultural Officer in the operational management of the Arboricultural service, ensuring service activities are completed on schedule and in accordance with service standards and Council Policy/Procedures.
Carry out operational duties, as required, to ensure efficient service delivery.
Undertake staff training and tool box talks as directed by the Senior Arboricultural Officer including staff inductions, use of equipment and other on the job training.
Assist the Senior Arboricultural Officer with managing staff.
Deal with any issues that arise in respect of employee relations and conduct, informing/escalating to the Senior Arboricultural Officer as appropriate.
Motivate staff towards the achievement of service goals and delivery of a high standard of service to the residents of Darlington.
Undertake service monitoring.
Encourage feedback from staff regarding opportunities for continuous improvement of processes and working practices.
Ensure compliance with technical specifications, quality standards and the implementation of a programme of work.
Ensure that works are carried out with due regard to environmental issues and the latest environmental regulations.
Qualifications:
NPTC or equivalent tree climbing qualification
Certification/training in the application of chemical to treat tree stump or ability to obtain within reasonable period of commencing employment
Current driving licence and ability to access reliable transport to carry out the travel requirements of the post.
Knowledge:
Knowledge and understanding of the latest Arboriculture good practice.
Knowledge of and experience of identifying tree species, assessing the condition and safety of trees
Knowledge and understanding of customer care and quality standards in service delivery.
Knowledge and understanding of the health and safety requirements relating to working in an arboricultural environment.
Knowledge of pathogens, structural weaknesses and diseases to inform Arborists of potential hazards
Experience:
Approximately two years’ experience of working in a tree team as a climber at craft level
Experience of interpreting legislation, policy or procedures to give recommendations and advice
Skills & Abilities:
Able to supervise a team on a daily basis, including giving advice and guidance, demonstrating duties, instructing, checking the work of others and leading by example
Able to use initiative and make decisions outside immediate policy and procedure and without reference to manager
Able to deliver effective toolbox talks and training sessions to staff
Able to coordinate and plan resources to deliver an effective operational service
Able to respond to changing and conflicting priorities sometimes at short notice
Able to build and maintain relationships with a wide range of people including Members, Senior Management, other Council Officers and external organisations
Able to communicate both orally and in writing to a wide range of audiences
Able to analyse situations and produce effective solutions
Able to use appropriate equipment and undertake various manual handling duties
