About the Firm
We are Newcastle and the North East’s leading divorce solicitors and family lawyers. With a staff of 30, IT and data security are a crucial enabler of our business. As we continue to grow, we are seeking an experienced and strategic Part-Time CIO to lead all aspects of IT within the business.
Role Overview
The Part-Time CIO will be responsible for ensuring the security and efficiency of our technology infrastructure and leveraging digital tools to enhance solicitor workflow and operational efficiency. This role requires a strategic thinker with hands-on capabilities in legal technology, data security and supplier management. The technology involved ranges from standard Microsoft Office suite to cutting edge AI.
Key Responsibilities
1. Advise senior leadership on technology use within the firm
2. Manage digital initiatives to improve operational efficiency and client service
3. Manage IT suppliers and their contracts
Cybersecurity & Compliance
1. Work with our compliance manager to ensure compliance with UK data protection laws (GDPR, SRA guidelines, and other regulatory requirements).
2. Oversee cybersecurity measures to protect sensitive client and firm data.
3. Conduct regular risk assessments and implement necessary security enhancements.
4. Evaluate our existing technology and infrastructure, both software and hardware, including case management system, document management (Microsoft Office), Email (Microsoft Exchange), Transcription, Websites, office-based hardware (LAN, desktops, printers, telephony, access control) and mobile technology used by staff.
5. Based on your evaluation and discussions with senior leadership, ensure the Firm’s technology is maintained and evolved with the needs of the business.
6. Optimise IT infrastructure for remote and hybrid work models.
7. Manage relationships with external IT vendors and service providers.
Process Optimisation & Innovation
1. Identify opportunities for automation and efficiency improvements.
2. Implement best practices in document management and digital workflows.
3. Work with our AI consultant to leverage AI.
IT Support & Training
1. Promote a culture of technology adoption and digital literacy within the firm.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Proven experience as a CIO, IT Director, or Senior IT Manager within a legal or professional services environment.
2. Strong understanding of legal technology solutions, including case management, document automation, and e-discovery tools.
3. Expertise in cybersecurity, data protection, and regulatory compliance (including GDPR and SRA guidelines).
4. Experience with cloud-based solutions, IT infrastructure, and remote working technologies.
5. Strong leadership, strategic thinking, and stakeholder management skills.
6. Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
7. A hands-on approach with the ability to balance strategic oversight with operational execution.
Desirable Qualifications
1. Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
2. IT certifications such as CISSP, CISM, or ITIL.
3. Experience working with law firms or professional services businesses.
