We are now looking for a Lab Manager / Quality Lead (combined role) to work within the Atmospheric and Environment Science department to ensure that our laboratories and associated assets are fit for purpose and well maintained. Our procedures and activities must be compliant with regulations, and our people should be provided with the appropriate guidance and support to operate safely and securely, creating long-term strategic value for the group and NPL.
Coordination of, and responding to, data requests or surveys for NPL information systems, and educating staff in the operation of NPL systems will be important parts of the role.
You will be a key part of the management team to ensure our work meets the requirements of ISO 9001 and ISO 17025 through NPL’s Quality Assurance and Health and Safety Systems.
The majority of time will be spent in an office and laboratory environment at our Teddington site, but there will be occasional off-site working too.
We are now working in a hybrid way, with a mix of remote and office working. We strive to offer a great work-life balance. If you are looking for part-time or flexible options, we will try to make this work where business allows, depending on the kind of role you do and the part of the business you work in.
We have ambitious plans for the future, and this role is intended to work alongside the managers, scientists, engineers, and central support functions to ensure that our future plans are supported by robust procedures and excellent facilities that meet our needs both now and in the future.
A technical degree would be advantageous as you'll be having high-level conversations with scientists and engineers who'll expect you to understand their needs.
The successful candidate will have:
1. Demonstrable experience of running continuous improvement to meet new efficiency, environmental, and commercial targets from management.
2. Operational leadership experience within a laboratory environment.
3. Skills in working cross-functionally with teams such as H&S, Quality Assurance, facilities, maintenance, security, and logistics.
4. Experience in quality leadership, including assuring compliance to statutory requirements; having led internal audits, investigated incidents, and established root causes.
5. Project management skills to organise and prioritise workload across multiple activities, including assessment of priority resource requirements.
6. Previous experience of health and safety leadership, including signing off risk and COSHH assessments and IOSH training.
Health and Safety Leadership: You will act on behalf of the team to ensure that our laboratories and associated assets are fit for purpose, well maintained, and compliant with regulations.
Quality Leadership: You will be the local source and first point of contact for Quality Assurance best practice within the groups. Work closely with other quality/compliance roles across the NPL, including the Quality Assurance team, Group Leaders, the Project Management Office, and Science teams to ensure the rollout of best practices and compliance with NPL's evolving quality management system.
Provide training as required and share knowledge and best practices across NPL as a leading member of the Quality Lead community. You will organise internal audits and support UKAS auditors, locally managing the ISO 9001 and 17025 laboratory accreditation.
Please note: Applications will be reviewed, and interviews conducted throughout the duration of this advert; therefore, we may at any time bring the closing date forward. We encourage all interested applicants to apply as soon as practical.
We actively recruit citizens of all backgrounds, but the nature of our work in specific departments means that nationality, residency, and security requirements can be more tightly defined than others. You will be asked about this throughout the recruitment process. To work at NPL, you will need to obtain BPSS security clearance.
