Job summary The post holder will undertake clinical duties primarily in the Main theatre and Day Surgery Units together with the Obstetric and Intensive Care Units, according to the provisional timetables below. The Department needs an experienced, general anaesthetist who can complement the current skill mix. There is no specific requirement for a specialist interest, though this may be accommodated. Main duties of the job The post will therefore have an interesting, varied, and stimulating mix of frontline, out of hours (OOH), acute care of patients for general anaesthesia, obstetric anaesthesia and intensive care medicine as well as daytime elective surgical lists. The balance of this workload will vary depending of the needs of the department, but it is anticipated that the total weekend commitment will not be more than 12-13 times per year. The following timetables give examples of the 2 job plans - one with no OOH shifts and one with a 1:16 OOH rota. The post holder will shift from one job plan to the other depending on requirements; the average weekly number of dccPAs will be 9, with 1 PA for supporting activities. Further dccPAs may be available. Candidates interested in working part time are encouraged to apply and on-call would be on a pro rata basis. Training and support will be given to maintain and develop the skills required for this varied role. The Trust will also support the post holder in progressing towards postgraduate examinations, entry to training or application for entry to the Specialist Register, if applicable. The department traditionally maintains a high degree of flexibility in service provision, and whilst most anaesthetists have a degree of predictability to their weekly commitments, many do not, and the post holder will be expected to provide flexibility in the timing and clinical nature of their weekly commitment.
