If so, this could be the opportunity for you The opportunity Our client's established engineering design consultancy is seeking an experienced Senior or Principal Mechanical Engineer to join their growing design team in Stretford, Manchester. The business supports a wide range of clients within the UK rail and utilities industries and is currently focusing on a strong pipeline of work in the water sector. This is a 12-month minimum term contract with a high likelihood of extension, offering a stable opportunity to work on long-term infrastructure projects. The role This role will be located in Stretford, Manchester Sector: Water / Utilities Employment Type: Contract (Outside IR35, subject to assessment) Hours: 40 hours per week Rate: £56.82 per hour (Ltd), subject to IR35 assessment confirming outside status 12-month minimum term (ongoing likely) You’ll be contributing to a variety of wastewater and clean water infrastructure projects, including: Pumped storage solutions Odour control unit design Rerouting return flows around UMON4 meters General mechanical design for treatment and distribution systems Your duties and responsibilities will be Produce high-quality design deliverables that meet safety and quality standards Undertake detailed mechanical design calculations and drawings for water industry applications Provide technical direction and mentorship to CAD technicians, junior engineers, and graduates. Oversee and review work from subcontracted M&E design teams. Coordinate with equipment suppliers and manufacturers for system integration Prepare and review design investigations, technical reports, and specifications Ensure designs comply with relevant technical standards and project requirements. Accurately estimate design hours and support planning/scheduling activities Represent the business in meetings and deliver design presentations when required. You will have the following qualifications & experience Minimum of 10 years' relevant mechanical design experience, ideally within the water sector. Strong background in hydraulic design. Familiarity with electrical design principles and control systems Degree-qualified or HND in a relevant engineering discipline Proficient in standard IT tools and engineering software Member of a recognised professional engineering institution, actively working toward chartership It's great if you also have the following Chartered Engineer status (CEng). Multi-disciplinary knowledge, including electrical and/or control engineering. Experience with both clean water and wastewater projects. Understanding of construction methods, materials, and practical site constraints. Solid understanding of engineering drawing standards and best practice.
