An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Nutrition andDietetic Department at the Mid Yorkshire Hospital Teaching Trust to join ouracute team as a Specialist Dietitian for Surgery and Nutrition Support.
This post is a band 5 to 6 training post, ideal for candidates in the early stages of their career that are wanting to gain further experience within the speciality of surgical dietetics. Training will be subject to the candidate agreeing to a learning agreement, this is attached within this post. You will work with a supportive MDT with experience across a variety of disciplines of dietetic care. All training will be provided.
Youshould have experience working as a dietitian providing nutrition support advice and preferably some experience working with surgical patients.
Main duties of the job
You should have experience workingwith patients requiring oral and enteral nutrition support.Competency in parenteral nutrition would be preferred but training will beprovided upon commencing the position.
You will be a key member of the surgical and nutrition multi-disciplinary team.You will provide dietetic care on the parenteral nutrition wardround.
The post is a permanent, full timeband 5-6 progression position. NB: current band 6 dietitians will automatically progress to a band 6 post with additional training provided as needed.
You will be based at Pinderfields Hospital, covering inpatient wards and outpatient clinics. Sometravelling to Dewsbury District Hospital for outpatient clinics willbe required.
The caseload will include working withpatients with type 1 and 2 intestinal failure, bowel disease and disorders,cancers, disordered eating and other gastrointestinal / surgical conditions.
You will also provide dietetic supportfor the intensive care unit in the absence of the Clinical Lead Dietitian forCritical Care. Full training will be provided to support you.
You will require excellentcommunication and multi-disciplinary team working skills. You will need to be ableto work under pressure and cope well with emotionally charged situations.
The dietetic department is fullycommitted to CPD and clinical supervision. The post holder will be expected to take anactive role in supporting and supervising our student training programme.

Job description
Job responsibilities
1. To be a member of the team of Acute Dietitians and to personally provide dietetic support for patients within the surgical wards at Pinderfields Hospital.
2. To provide full management of care including nutritional assessment, dietetic treatment and advice and monitoring of inpatients and outpatients in a variety of different settings/locations.
3. To work as a core member of the Nutrition Support Team, providing advice as required on Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition on specialist ward rounds. To work closely with Nutrition Support Team MDT including the Clinical Nurse Specialists for Nutrition, Nutrition Pharmacist, Consultant Gastroenterologist and Consultant Surgeon.
4. To support the Clinical Lead Dietitian for Critical Care in the provision of nutritional support for patients on ICU and Burns.
5. To partake in departmental and multi-disciplinary team audits and research in this speciality.
6. To participate in the education and training of dietetic students during their clinical placements.
7. To undertake the measurement and evaluation of own work and current practices through the use and application of evidence-based practice, audit, research and outcome measures, and lead others in doing so as required. Make recommendations to changes in clinical practice, implementing new working practices in nutrition and surgery services.
8. To continue to develop and maintain practical and theoretical skills required to practice at an advanced level. To undertake CPD in relevant surgical conditions and related issues.
9. To work with the surgical multidisciplinary teams and ensure that they are all aware of good practice in relation to nutrition for this client group.
10. To liaise closely with the Hospital, Home Enteral Feeding and MY Therapy Dietitians to ensure high standards of continuing care following a patients discharge from hospital.
11. To provide timely nutritional support via the most appropriate route to patients identified as being at nutritional risk.
12. To develop and implement treatment plans and patient centred goals for patients following assessment and analysis of their condition, nutritional history, biochemical and clinical data, drug interactions, social and cultural circumstances.
13. Order tube feeds, supplements and special diets and modified texture diets for patients to ensure they meet their nutritional requirements in hospital.
14. Be responsible for safe discharge planning.
15. Engage in and represent the Dietetic service in surgery meetings and forums in partnership with the other Dietitians providing input into the Trust surgery Services.
16. To produce evidence-based information and resources, in all media, for patients, carers and health professionals around nutrition and surgical conditions, ordering as required. To ensure regular review in conjunction with patients and the public, taking into account cultural appropriateness.
17. To provide highly complex sensitive nutritional counselling to patients and carers using cognitive behavioural therapy and motivational interviewing to overcome barriers to change and effect behavioural change.
18. Demonstrate analytical skills in prioritising the best course of dietetic treatment in patients with highly complex clinical conditions, where nutritional goals may conflict with other ongoing physical, emotional, psychological and medical problems.
19. Take a role in the education of students by planning and organising own input, teaching clinical practice and implementing tutorials. To assess and report progress to student and named trainer to ensure safe practice within allotted periods of student training.
20. To provide accurate and timely information around patient activity on a daily basis for system 1 to support the performance management requirements of the service.
21. To provide cover for other Acute dietitians (including Critical Care, Burns and Gastroenterology) as required.
