What You Will Contribute To Altos
Responsibilities
* Be responsible for the day to day scientific and administrative management of the hub providing a high-quality histology service.
* Work with the Chief of Scientific Operation and other Hub Leads at Altos to ensure smooth and efficient workflows between Hubs.
* Be responsible for setting, reviewing, and updating standards and protocols to ensure high quality support in collaboration with the Histology innovation hub teams at our US sites in San Diego and San Francisco, Bay Area.
* Be expected to apply scientific knowledge, skill, and expertise at the highest professional level over the full range of services.
* Ensure quality assurance of samples and results before making them available to researchers.
* Advise users on the best practice in sample collection, processing and data generation.
* Ensure that all users of the hub receive appropriate training, advice and guidance in the use of histology equipment, applications and in data/record keeping.
* Represent the hub at local, national and international meetings, as required.
* Communicate and collaborate with scientists giving scientific advice on protocols/best practice for complex experiments and how to prepare samples for best output.
* Ensure services are kept state-of-the-art, suggesting new technologies, platforms and methodologies for the advancement of the science as appropriate.
* Engage in institutional projects and create collaborations at the local and institute wide level.
* Keep people informed of hub matters (e.g. urgent health and safety issues, equipment issues, number of requests).
* Act as/assume the role of Safety Officer for the facility in relation to standard H&S matters and ensure compliance, present information to different groups, induct all new staff in health & safety and general operational matters to the hub.
* Be involved in regular 1:1s with direct reports, alleviating bottlenecks, helping prioritize work focus, developing skills, and sharing feedback.
* Foster relationships with Altos PIs and researchers to understand their evolving needs and determine how to potentially accommodate them based on the hub’s infrastructure and capabilities.
* Create collaboration and cross talk between all Altos Institutes to shared databases, best practice, information etc. to ensure effective management of the hub.
* Undertake responsibilities as needed and appropriate to support the management of the Altos Cambridge hubs.
Who You Are
The successful candidate will join us as the Manager of the Histology Innovation Hub at Altos Labs Cambridge (UK) Institute of Science reporting to the Chief of Scientific Operations. This position is for an experienced Histology scientist with deep experience in laboratory operations and workflows. The successful applicant will demonstrate a high degree of knowledge in the field of histology and in other aspects of model tissue analysis and be able to troubleshoot these processes with minimal help. Further, but not limited to, the successful candidate will have a wealth of experience and knowledge in managing a core facility, in advising and training hub staff, and guiding researchers in histological techniques and processes. You will be highly enthusiastic to collaborate widely throughout Altos Labs as well as with external service providers, relevant agencies and community representatives.
Minimum Qualifications
* BSc / MSc or higher in biology, life sciences or a related discipline and have significant experience in histology.
* Have significant experience in managing a histology facility.
* Experience of histology workflows, including paraffin and cryo embedding, sectioning, immunostaining, histochemistry, RNA hybridization technologies and spatial omics.
* Previous experience in training and demonstrating skills and techniques.
* Strong working knowledge of histological techniques.
* Knowledge of handling, processing and analyzing complex tissue expression.
* Highly developed organizational skills.
* Be service-oriented and show a keen interest in further developing histology protocols and applications.
* Have an open personality, and the capability to easily interact with people of different scientific backgrounds, nationalities and personalities.
* Can influence, develop and communicate effectively within the team locally and globally.
* Ability to multitask and work across multiple projects simultaneously, with flexibility to react to changing priorities.
