Community Social Worker Approved Mental Health Practitioner
This role receives a market pay supplement. The salary is Grade 9: £42,513 - £46,693 per annum pro-rata (Including market pay supplement. This payment is reviewed on a 12 monthly basis.
The Community Mental Health Team based at both Tonna Hospital and The Forge (Port Talbot) are looking for Social Workers with community mental health and AMPH experience along with a rounded knowledge of current best practice in mental health.
The CMHT in the borough is a well-established multi-disciplinary team, comprising of mental health practitioners from both NPT Council and Swansea Bay University Health Board. Working closely with primary care, Police, Health board, Drugs and Alcohol Services and continuing to develop excellent partnership arrangements with the Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment team, Single Point You will be joining a committed and supportive, motivated team, who work hard to deliver excellent standards in a positive working environment.
In recognition of the complexity of the AMHP role, the council is striving to strengthen the support we offer our AMHP’s by offering robust support and training opportunities. We are strengthening our links with the All Wales AMHP Lead Network (AWALN) and will be hosting the first regional AMHP forum in June of this year. Along with an AMHP allowance paid to qualified and practicing AMHP’s.
You would be expected to work within the legislative framework of the Mental Health Act 1983 (amended 2007) and the Mental Health Measure (Wales) 2010, along with demonstrating an understanding of how to work in a strength-based, outcome-focused way.
A sound value base and excellent communication skills are also essential. Social Workers in the team are involved in undertaking Assessments, Reviews and Care Planning and need to have the enthusiasm to play an active role in delivering a high-quality service to our service users.

We have recently commenced a bi-monthly peer supervision group in conjunction with our bi-monthly AMHP forum. For those candidates who are not qualified AMHP’s, there are opportunities to undertake the AMHP training, with our AMHP lead, experienced AMHP’s, reliable supervision and reduced caseload supporting this process. Any successful candidate would be expected to embrace and support the ongoing development of the service.
There are also opportunities for more experienced social workers, such as training to become an AMHP or Practice Educator, and enrolment on management and leadership training courses. NPT Council invests in their staff, this is an opportunity to join a local authority who will support your development.
Ideally you will have;
Applicants will need to be social work qualified and professionally registered as a social worker with Social Care Wales. Experience of working in a mental health and Approved Mental Health Professional is desirable.
You will need a knowledge and working practice of the Social Services and Wellbeing (Wales) Act 2014, to include outcome-focused assessment and a working knowledge of the Mental Health Measures (2010), Continuing Health Care, the Mental Capacity Act 2005 including Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.
