Job overview
We have a wonderful opportunity to join the Accident and Emergency department at Basildon Hospital as a Speciality Doctor covering a 24-hour Emergency Department roster along with opportunities for professional development.
Our ED is a Trauma Unit part of the North East London Trauma Network, on average we see 147,000 attendances per year. Opportunities for variation in skills from Minor Injuries to life-saving treatment in our state-of-the-art Resus area.
The post holder will be clinically and educationally responsible to the Consultants in Emergency Medicine; with active participation in the reception, initial diagnosis, investigation, and treatment of patients attending the Emergency Department alongside ongoing referral if required. In addition, the post holder will provide support for foundation doctors and junior clinical fellows within the Emergency Department.
The post holder will supervise the junior medical staff’s performance of procedures appropriate to their level of experience.
The Consultants are very committed to teaching and post-graduate training and will ensure appropriate opportunities for professional development including the CESR programme.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be part of a full shift pattern providing 24-hour cover to the Emergency Department; your role will include the assessment, resuscitation, management, and safe transfer (where necessary) of seriously ill and injured patients, care of patients on the observation ward as required, referral of patients to in-patient facilities as appropriate, and supervision of junior staff.
You will be involved in proactive patient management to achieve timely and high-quality assessment and management, the teaching and supervision of junior medical and nursing staff, and be actively involved in audit and the development of departmental policies.
You will play an active role in the day-to-day management and administration of the Emergency department. Out of hours, you will be expected to assist in the running of the shop floor and support the department.

Person specification
Qualifications
* MBBS or Equivalent
* Completed 4 years full-time post-graduate training with 2 years in Specialty Training
* Specialty Training within Emergency Medicine
Experience
* Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in the specialty.
* Minimum of four years full-time experience at SHO grade or equivalent, with at least 2 years being in Accident & Emergency Medicine
Teaching
* Knowledge & experience of supervising undergraduates, junior doctors & other staff
* Ability to supervise postgraduate research
