The role We are seeking a skilled Embedded Electronic Design Engineer to play a critical role in the design, enhancement, advancement, and production of our IoT devices. This role requires skill across multiple engineering disciplines including electronics, firmware, mechanical design, and testing. Working within a small, dynamic team, you will contribute throughout the entire product lifecycle—from concept to manufacture. Your primary focus will be designing embedded systems and electronic solutions to enhance our product portfolio while leading the end-to-end product development process. Key responsibilities Develop and implement electronic designs for IoT devices, including liquid monitoring solutions, data loggers, and asset trackers. Full electronic design lifecycle, from initial concept through to production. Design analogue, digital, and communication circuits. Schematic capture, multi-layer PCB design, and layout. Programming embedded systems in ‘C’ for Microchip PIC microcontrollers. Develop communication protocols such as I2C, SPI, UART, MQTT, and others. Create and maintain technical documentation, including schematics, BOMs, and manufacturing schedules. Support prototyping, testing, and manufacturing processes, including the development of custom programming and test fixtures. Essential skills Embedded systems: Proven experience in reading and writing embedded programming (C) and experience with Microchip PIC microcontrollers such as PIC16/PIC18/etc. Experience working with Microchips MPLAB IDE and MPLABX integrated development environment applications. Knowledge of in-circuit programming tools and equipment such as PICKIT ICSP. Implementation of digital communication protocols such as I2C/SPI/UART/Etc. Digital and analogue electronics: Strong knowledge of low-power designs and wireless communication technologies (e.g., Bluetooth/BLE, LoRa, Wi-Fi). Comprehensive knowledge of and experience working with a wide range of electronic components/devices such as Microcontrollers, Sensors, LEDs, MOSFETs, ADCs, Transceivers/Translators, Communications Modules, etc. ECAD: Proficiency in schematic capture and PCB design (Altium Designer). Generation of manufacturing output files such as Gerber/BOMs/3DCAD Product development: Experience with new product introduction (NPI) and familiarity with multi-disciplinary design processes. An appreciation of testing, software and mechanical design. Documentation: Ability to create standardised technical documentation and ensure compliance with CE/UKCA marking requirements. Desired skills Qualifications: Post Graduate Certificate in Microelectronics. Post Graduate Diploma in Electronic Product Development. MSc Electronic Product Development Prototyping: Experience building product prototypes using various materials and techniques (e.g., 3D printing, breadboarding, soldering). Compliance: Understanding of EMC requirements and regulatory standards for product compliance. Production support: Development of custom jigs, test equipment, and scripts for production.
