The duties of the Specialty Doctor Surgeon will involve him / her in routine and emergency clinical work and in giving direction to the SHO level Speciality doctors and FY1 trainees in the department. Working for our organisation The Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust provides acute hospital services for an area in South West Kent and parts of East Sussex. The main acute hospitals are the Maidstone General Hospital, Maidstone and the newly redeveloped all single room, Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury. There are 5 UGI Consultants, 9 LGI Consultants and 1 Emergency Surgery Consultants. The consultant body is supported by a team of middle grade and junior doctors. All emergency surgery is centralised at the Tunbridge Wells Hospital. Elective surgery and outpatient clinics are also undertaken at Maidstone. Detailed job description and main responsibilities The Specialty Doctor Surgeon will be required to undertake ward review and cover, assist in theatres and with the emergency on-call rota. He / she will be required to have a close relationship with all the wards, including the intensive care unit, the theatre and nursing staff and other professional and technical staff. The successful candidate will demonstrate a clear understanding of the needs of the department. The post is whole-time. Flexibility in the weekly work pattern is essential given the varying demands upon the service, and will be allocated given the successful candidate's level of experience, to best address the needs of the department. The post will be supervised by the consultants with responsibility to the Clinical Director, Mr Daniel Lawes. The post holder will be required to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstance and to be available for such irregular outside normal rota duties. The post holder will be required to deputise from time to time for absent colleagues. The post holder will be required to be involved in continual professional development. The appointee will be encouraged to attend clinics, operating sessions and ward rounds of surgeons other than those to whom he / she is responsible if this is in the interest of training. Both the Maidstone General Hospital and the Pembury Hospital have purpose-built Post Graduate Medical Centres that organise lectures, film meetings and symposia. Approved courses and lectures take place at these locations. There are comprehensive medical libraries in both the Maidstone General Hospital and the Pembury Hospital, with electronic resource access. The Maidstone Post Graduate Centre opened in 2010 as the International Minimal Access Centre for Surgery (IMACS) following a complete refurbishment with links to the Endoluminal Operating Theatre.

This post is to support a busy Surgical Department. This whole time appointment of 12 PA's with on-call commitment (subject to revision of job plan) and is based at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust.
The post holder will be attached to the general surgical consultant firms, rotating as necessary and carrying out duties for any of the Trust's consultant surgeons. This post will be one of ten at Tunbridge Wells and a similar number at Maidstone.
